Posted May 6, 201311 yr comment_422666 anyone know if itˊs possible to find an original 5 speed 240z gearbox here in europe? And if itˊs worth the extra overdrive? currently my US 4 speed wonˊt go much faster than 100 mph, and by then my revs are to high, not nice for highway driving. I feel the car has enough power, but lacking more gears.. iˊd be more better for the engine and fuel economy if I had an extrfa gear. Iˊd rather not put 280zx gearbox on it, but keep it original. May 7, 201311 yr comment_422717 Well... if you are lucky and i mean REAL lucky, you could find one. But i think it's not likely. You have much better chances to find nice 5 speeder from Usa. There is plenty of options and prices are low. All the euro Z's were equipped with 5 speed gearbox, so if someone has scrapped or totaled one, that might be your only option. Maybe you could just settle with euro/jdm shifter knob? May 7, 201311 yr Author comment_422727 Putting a later model 5 speed gearbox in it, is not what I wan't to do to this classic . I can try putting an add, maybe it helps..? I mean a euro gearbox must have survived somewhere.. May 7, 201311 yr comment_422731 Yea they have survived, most of them are still in original place, inside car Its free to try! IMHO it does not ruin the classic value of car, if you put 70's 5 speed. I have 77 280z 5 speed and it does look similar to 4 speed externally. Only different guts. You could try to find Roadster 5 speeds, cause thats what Euro Z's have in them if i remember correctly. May 7, 201311 yr comment_422757 barts, your best bet of finding one is in the UK, as there are a lot of modded S30's gone with uprated gearboxes and thus the original one is taken out. Pretty easy to find over here. Koalia, only up to, I think, 1971 was the same '71A five speed 'box the same as the roadster, and then you will find the starter motor is on the other side. May 9, 201311 yr comment_422975 Hi Bart, I agree with Koalia. Finding an original 71A will be hard to find. They also have a fibre fifth gear synchro which is known for wearing out and is NLA. Better to go for a 71B out of a 280Z or 280ZX. The cosmetic differences are minimal.Chas Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46476-euro-original-5-speed-manual-gearbox/#findComment-422975 Share on other sites
May 9, 201311 yr Author comment_422978 Nils from JDMjunkies ( he's on the forum here ) has one for sale . I want a shop to rebuild the gearbox anyhow. I know it will cost money Is this the correct gearbox? May 10, 201311 yr comment_423032 anyone know if itˊs possible to find an original 5 speed 240z gearbox here in europe? There were two different 5-speed transmissions fitted to 'Euro' market 240Zs, depending on the date of manufacture.First cars had the FS5C-71A, but later cars had the FS5C-71B. Which one will be a more suitable and 'period correct' bolt-in fitment for your particular car would depend on the car's production date.Bear in mind that the actual transmission is only one part of this. Trying to put the 'wrong' transmission in a car might give you difficulty with the hole in the trans tunnel, the console, the shifter itself, as well as the crossmember and the prop shaft. You also need to consider diff location ( early or late type ) for the prop shaft, and the diff ratio. What year / month / original market is your 240Z? May 11, 201311 yr Author comment_423139 mm.. so to be short, i'd rather stick with the 4 speed then?If I have to cut the tunnel up to make it fit, and change the driveshaft and diff, it will be to much really Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46476-euro-original-5-speed-manual-gearbox/#findComment-423139 Share on other sites
