Posted May 9, 201311 yr comment_422929 Take a look at the attached picture. Piston number 5 & 6 deteriorated down to the compression ring. There should be debris through out the entire motor. It is an N42 block with an N47 heads. My plans are to bore, stroke and add turbo. Should I spend time trying to determine if this block is salvageable or trash it and start looking for another motor? I have a turbo intake. Thank you for your thoughts and opinions Robert Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46500-trash-this-motor-and-start-with-another-1975-280z/ Share on other sites
May 9, 201311 yr comment_422931 Bin it , looks like foreign object has been hitting piston on right , bent rods etc, decent blocks are pretty cheap over there . Just like a car rebuild , start with best possible platform . May 9, 201311 yr comment_422949 If you are going to stroke it and add a turbo, I would start with a F54 block. The F54 has extra webbing in the water jackect between cylinders 1 - 2, 3 - 4 and 5 - 6 often also called siamesed cylinders. The F54 is considered to be the stronger of the two L28 blocks and is the block originaly used for the turbo engines. May 9, 201311 yr comment_422968 I wouldn't get hung up on L28 block numbers and which is better. The n42 is supposed to have the highest nickel content - thus stronger. Just make sure a machinist checks it out Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46500-trash-this-motor-and-start-with-another-1975-280z/#findComment-422968 Share on other sites

May 9, 201311 yr Author comment_422986 I do agree with the siamesed blocks being stronger, but the cooling capability of a non-siamesed block should be superior? Do you agree? And for any HP under 400, not saying I can get even above 300, but any of these blocks should do just fine. Do you guys agree? May 9, 201311 yr comment_422990 You might need to step over to Hybridz and do some searching over there. Any motor can be turbocharged. The effectiveness of the the turbo application will be with your engine management. I'm considering turbo charging my L24. Cooling issues have been the heads and lead to detonation. I would recommend spending money and effort in an aftermarket ECU, air to air cooler, modern turbo charger and accessories; and less effort and money on oversizing or stroking a L block.
