Posezion's 1971 240z

Hey all, very soon I am getting a 1971 240z. Basically it's coming to me from family for free, though I know nothing about it in terms of condition and what damage is done. I was told it sat for 20 years with tons of parts installed/waiting to be installed including a lowered suspension, a transmission mount, front/rear sway bars, roll bars, new header and some front air scoop or something along those lines oh and new bucket seats, but if its been sitting for 20 years than idk. I'm completely new to 240z's and real cars in general. Here's a thread of my current car, a chevrolet cobalt. It's nothing special, trust me, just love for the look. I ended up putting in a CAI in and some electronic improvements on the inside. But this opportunity to work on a real car, and a mean one at that, and to actually learn about cars, hey I'll take the opportunity up. I know people who can do body work for me for cheap (I think) as well as detail.

Anyway, this will not completed any time soon, due to money issues, and I have no idea how much I'm getting to start with, but I know it'll be coming my way very soon (should be between week-month, maybe even this Wednesday which I will take pictures by then)

I'm planning to make this car a fast badass, for my slowbalt cannot do that. :(

I am more than happy to encourage any input into future mods or ideas of what to do to it. How to make it a great ride really. And I'd like ideas on modernizing it a little; smoother gauges, tinted windows, decent rims, and if possible body kits/modifications, but primarily the interrior.

Kinda sounds like somebody was getting it ready for competition of some kind. You shouldn't try and crank it right off the bat, they'll get all the muck from the gas tank ran through the fuel system. Use the search box and put in "waking up the beast" or something like that, not positive what the words were. Read, read, and read some more, then when you get it take a bunch of pictures and then ask what to do. You'll get bombed with good ideas and suggestions. This is more about restoring to original condition but there's tons of "fast badass" on here. Here's a good read Datsun L-series ZCAR engine modifications.

Awesome link, thanks. And yeah, pictures will be coming up. I'm going to go as far with it as I can (hopefully) although I'm a touch/go project type of person so we'll see. Appearantly more and more mods are coming up, and yeah I'm also quite positive it was getting prepped for competition.

Thanks for the welcome! :D

So sorry for the lateness, just started a new job + other life blah blah right around the time I was going to upload the vidya, but turns out it's harder than I thought to get it from my phone to my computer. But here it is: The Z - YouTube

And I live in Simpsonville, Charles. Anywhere near?

I'll be dragging it home soon, it's about 1.5 hours off. Obviously first I'll focus on reviving her. If everything goes according to planned, all I'd have to do is rip apart the major components (Clueless but I have initial help at the moment) and make sure everything is refreshed in terms of the mechanical parts; cleaned out oil/gas/injectors?/etc. then re-mount the components and the miscellaneous unmounted pieces and re-work dry-rotted tubing and shot wiring, if any too seriously damaged to test the engine at the time. My goal is to not spend over $100 on the revival, because like I said and as I was told it ran perfectly, had some things taken out and then sat for 20ish years. Framework was re-done/improved before it sat as well so hopefully that wasn't rusted through. Based on the look under the hood had only moisture, though the hood crumbled between my fingers in a pinch at the end tip of it.

All this being said, I have enough informants to help solve most of the beginner work, but do any of you 240z gurus have any advice for key components to check/maintain before any attempts to bring it to life? Also, in the video, could anyone tell me what that is at 1:24ish?

Thanks - Adam

This car does not have injectors . They are called carburetors, and they would have been SUs made by Hitachi. Due to the fact you are waving the camera all over the place, it's very hard to tell what the carbs are now.

Holleys perhaps?

By all means get her runnin' but sort out the rust issues before you waste money and time on performance 'stuff'

Without a sound body, you have nuthin'.

Mechanicals is the easy part.

At one stage at around 1min 30 you are holding an aftermarket inlet manifold for a down draught carburetor. Thought there was a sump pan there as well, but again it was hard to tell.

Good luck with her.

Better start reading up on triple sidedraft Weber's for Z's, cause that's what you're unwrapping at 1:24. Nice and clean. No experience with them myself but plenty of information on this site and elsewhere. Didn't see the SU's - you're running a pair of downdraft carbs but they have a bad rep. You could try them, just to get it started (after draining the fuel tank and replacing all the filters and hoses, changing the oil, etc.) but then I'd put the triples. Maybe get the car sandblasted at a local bodyshop so you can see the good and repair the bad. Ospho on the rust if it's not too horrible. Hoods are available.

I'd work on making it a "fast badass" and forget that other stuff. Those retro rims might look cool if they were shined up.

I agree with Stanley. The triples are great if you can get them tuned but I would start with the down draft Weber if they will run. The triples are probably worth more than the whole car the way it sits. Rust could be a significant problem from the looks of the hood. How long has it been sitting in the yard? I had one like that sitting in the yard for a long time and it accelerated the rust under the car. Let me know if you need anything. I think your budget for getting it running is highly optimistic but we will see. There is a lot that needs doing. Don't start taking it a part until you have a good plan and know what your getting into. There are many cars out there that have been taken apart and still are because the owners under estimated the time and money to get it back together. Get it running and sorted first. PM me if you need anything, I have owned Z's for 25 years and have taken several all the way a part. I know Z parts better than any other car I have ever worked on.
