FW471B Mystery Switch

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

A quick question regarding my B-model four speed. I pulled the transmission last Saturday in order to replace the clutch which had failed (throwout bearing really) and in giving the box a once-over outside the car I discovered a second electrical switch up near the shift mechanism. I'm including a pic below.

The box has another two-wire connector just aft of the clutch fork, which I know is the reverse lights switch, as I had no reverse lights until I connected the loose wires to that. What I'm wondering is what is that other switch, or whatever it is, up by the shifter?

Also, has anyone ever pulled a transmission and found the throwout bearing collar to have been made of plastic? Mine was, and it was destroyed from the throwout bearing disintegrating around it. First time I've seen a plastic collar. Last time on this car too I hope, I replaced it with a steel one from MSA.

The other typical switches are for top gear and neutral. Most are normally open and close when the condition occurs. An ohm-meter should tell the story.

Wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the plastic collar if you haven't tossed it yet.

On the 280Z the vacuum advance was only engaged in the highest (generally 4th) gear. (or so I have been told...) My B series 4 speed (the one that is on the floor under my work bench with no 2nd gear syncros...) has that same switch.

I don't think there is one on the ZX 5 speed.

The switch is indeed a neutral switch. It's also the same part as the reverse light switch.

Mine has been disconnected since before I got the car with no noticeable effects, I don't know if there is a starter interlock if it's in gear and the switch is hooked up or not.
