Posted June 5, 201311 yr comment_424938 So I have the opportunity to pick up a 5spd transmission fairly cheaply (~$100) but the output shaft housing appears to be slightly crushed. Is it worth my time (and $$) to purchase this with intentions of rebuilding it & putting it into my '72 240z? My concern is if the piece is available, and what my odds are of actually having a functioning (and non-leaking) transmission. Does anyone have this piece & willing to sell it? June 5, 201311 yr comment_424982 Pass on this and keep looking for a better transmission. That tail housing is likely junk. The rest might be good as a parts donor. June 5, 201311 yr comment_424983 For the cost of a rebuild kit and your time plus the $100, you could probably find a decent used 5 speed somewhere else. Rebuilding isn't easy and the results aren't guaranteed to be good. Plus the fact that it's an early 5 speed (speedo screw and hanger ears), with the large jump from 2 to 3.If you could find a cheap tail shaft housing and just swap it out without rebuilding, it might be worth the effort. Otherwise it seems like lots of effort for not much return. June 5, 201311 yr comment_424985 Is it fixable? Maybe.Would I spent a hundred bucks on it? Nope.(edit: but then again, I also live in the land of nearly free 4 speed datsun transmissions) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46704-5spd-output-shaft-housing-availability/#findComment-424985 Share on other sites

June 6, 201311 yr comment_425002 Tell him you've got a guy who'll give him $50 for the shifter assembly and speedometer gear stuff off it. He pays shipping.Wade Nelson68 Eagle's Nest / PO Box 1701Arboles, CO 81121 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46704-5spd-output-shaft-housing-availability/#findComment-425002 Share on other sites
June 6, 201311 yr comment_425010 A 5spd. for $100.00 sounds like a good deal to me."it might need to be rebuilt" - that can be said of any used 5spd. found outside a running car.Large gap between 2 & 3 - yes {but not SO large} Plus 1st & 2nd are better matched to your stock 3.36 rear gear - than the later 5spd.'s are. Everything is a trade-off of some kind. Which options you choose depends on how you are going to use the car.No question you can find/buy a better transmission - heck if you have the money, buy a rebuilt from a known source - put the $675+ into it right up front and be done. But then that won't gain you any experience rebuilding transmissions...FWIW,Carl B. June 6, 201311 yr comment_425039 Good point on the 3.36 diff ratio. This guy is looking for 5th gear. Sell the shifter and speedo gear to Wade, 5th gear below, and keep the bellhousing for someone doing a 240SX trans. conversion (which would actually be good gears for your 3.36) and you'll make some money.tranny gears wanted (1977-1980) - Parts Wanted - HybridZ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46704-5spd-output-shaft-housing-availability/#findComment-425039 Share on other sites
