Posted June 12, 201311 yr comment_425436 Ok guys, I'm afraid this officially falls into the "stupid question" category, but can someone please clarify the correct oil fill for a manual trans ('73, B-type)? I've searched this site (via Google for better results) and consulted my FSM but I swear it has a typo or something: it says "1.6L; 2-3/8 US pt; 2-3/4 Imp pt"First of all, 1.6L does not equal 2-3/8 US pt, it's 3-3/8. And although it is close to 2-3/4 Imp pt, that's not quite right either. Second, "liter" isn't spelled out like in the differential section, it has a funny-looking script L instead. Does this mean some unit other than liters? I just want to know whether 1.6L or 2-3/8 pt is correct.I'm using the scanned '73 FSM from xenonS30.com; typos seem highly unlikely, but possible I guess. The differential section of the same FSM says "1.0L; 1.0 US qt; 7/8 Imp qt" which is perfect. I also can't figure out why one section uses quarts and the other uses pints. Seems fishy. Any help? June 12, 201311 yr comment_425438 The good news is, fill until it hits the bottom of the fill hole. That's the "right" amount. The volumes listed are average expected capacities. If you're filling through another hole since you can't get the fill plug out, well then use the listed quatities. You are just witnessing documentation and the evolution of said documentation.I remember this was discussed in another thread where several variances in wording and quantities were hi-lighted between different FSM years. Some made it explicit to "fill until it runs on your shoe" while others just listed the capacities. I think everyone agreed that "full" is the right amount and now worry about an oz/decalitre/micro-pint here or there.Just checking the 76 FSM, the paragraph reads "1.6 liters ( 3 3/8 US pt) 2 7/8 imp Pt." so the 2 3/8" in the 73 manual is wrong. Actually the 73 manual in the text on bottom of page TM-11 says "1.6 litres (3 3/8 US gal 3/4 Imper. gal) "!! there is no "2" on the 3/4!!! Katayama would roll over on his couch if he saw that!Apparently they had other more pressing emergencies to deal with 73 than proof reading the documentation.... Like how to get those flat tops to return the emmisions specs they needed..... June 12, 201311 yr Author comment_425441 Ha! Silly flat tops...Yeah I know to fill up to the fill hole, but I'd like to know roughly how much oil to buy. Sounds like 1.6L is correct, or 3-3/8 pints (or 1.6 US qt!). See, if I'd gone by the 2-3/8 I'd have to go back to the store for another pint! Thanks Jim.My page definitely says pt, not gal (on TM-12, not 11). Maybe I'm using the wrong FSM? All the blurbs in xenon's zip file say 1973...TM Transmission.pdfAdditionally, am I reading the following page correctly that both the trans and the diff want SAE 90 oil? June 12, 201311 yr comment_425442 My '73 transmission took more than the FSM dictated, but I can't remember the actual amount. I went with the tried and true "Put more in until it pukes out the fill hole" method and I wanna say it took less than 2 quarts. June 12, 201311 yr comment_425451 Buy 2 quarts to fill and a 3rd if you want a spare. Ours took 90 percent of the 2nd quart before oil ran out of the fill plug (after a rebuild). June 13, 201311 yr Author comment_425512 Thanks guys, sounds like about 1.6 qt is what it will take, according to both the FSM and your experiences.
