Could the clock be bad and killing the battery? Sure. That's been beat to death.I wish to offer a new thought.I bet the guy went thru the glove box to install the clock.I put my money on the glove box light is shorted or not turning off.Take the bulb out if it works and see if that helps.Since you aren't going anywhere until the snow melts,Pull the fuse that runs the clock.Thats easier than pulling wires. From that point pull a couple of fuses and let the car sit until your known trouble point(2-3 day period).Reinstall the fuses and try to start it.This test will point you to the trouble area in an easy fashion. Have fun!! Daniel

Thank you gentleman for suggesting my problem with the starting. I enjoyed the chat line last night where did you guys go? Daniel I'll check the glove box light. By the way my chat room friends I was just warming up you didn't give me achance to spew my right wing conservative republican view points and any of my other maniacal and controversial thought processes. I know what your thinking is it possible to live on Long Island and be anything other then a liberal democrat. TRY ME. While we are at it when are we going into Iraq take all there Z cars and then take out Hussein and his henchman including Bin Laden. I kinda have gotten a little off the track. Thanks again for the help and keep in touch.

I just went down the posts and I think what y ou said in a earley post was missed by the others, I may be wrong but you said that the car was hard to start. Now was what you ment was that you had to spin the engine one time nothing spin the engine again nothing spin the engine and it catches or it starts to turn over slower and wont start. If that is what is happining have the charging systime checked . It sounds like the batt is not charged fully or is the wrong capacity. The battery should be able to spin the engine more than what it sounds like you are able to and at a good rate of speed. Now if you are turning it over for 30 to 45 sec. each time , that is excessive check the ignition, especially the points if you have points. An electronic ignition is a LOT hotter spark and is a vary good mod. I went with a '79zx ignition and am vary happy. Hope you can solve your prob. let us know ! we may all learn something here. All the best Gary:classic:

To check if there is indeed a drain on the battery when the ignitin is off install a simple test light between the terminal on the battery and it's corresponsing battery cable. It doesn't matter which one you use, positive or negative as what you are checking for is CURRENT.

If the test light glows, with the ignition key off, check to make sure that it isn't an intermittent glow. The clock draws current ONLY when it's internal spring winds down and the motor needs to kick in and wind it up again. 5 amps is WAY too high.

If it is a CONTINUOUS glow, then you do have a current drain. You can get in there and start unplugging and replugging components until the one that causes the light to turn off is unplugged. Be sure to reconnect the ones that do NOT shut off the light as you don't want to complicate the test.

In my experience, check the Accessory Relay first.

That was what was causing the battery drain on my car. Spent hours trying to find the problem, even considered and got an estimate on rebuilding the alternator, replacing regulator, bought a new battery, changed clock, changed fuses, did a LOT of work and then it turned out to be the Accessory Relay. Replaced it and everything works properly.

The Accessory Relay is what shunts power AWAY from the accessories as you start the car.

Beandip and E Scanlon,

I boosted the battery drove the car for about 1/2 hour never had the problem again. Changed the battery cables they were loose and you could pull them off with your hands. The car is starting up fine now. So I 'm going to keep my eye on it. My next project is installing tuneup kits in my sus the carbs are night right. There must be alot of varnish built up over years of night driving the car. Very hard to balance with rough idle and alot of gurgling from the exhaust.

Appreciate your responses keep em coming.

Did you guys check out Zmefly new whatever you call it by his name on the posts.

Pretty cool. How do you add that I'm computer illiterate.

Hi Burt:

It is called an AVATAR.

From Main (Home) Page at the Club site, on the left side near the top is the "OPTIONS" Menu, select , "USER CP" that takes you to the User Control Panel page. On that page scroll to the bottom and select the button that says "CHANGE AVATAR ". That will take you to a page where you can select from a list of avatars that Mike offers OR you can scroll to the bottom of the page to the area called CUSTOM AVATARS to either upload an avatar from another website or (as most of us do) click the BROWSE button to select a picture from your own computer to upload to the club site. Note the size limitations mentioned below the words USE CUSTOM AVATAR. After you have selected the picture that you want to use, click the SUBMIT MODIFICATIONS button, your done!

Depending on the picture that you choose you may need to re-size it to fit the 150 by 150 pixel limitation. That was the most difficult part for me. I stumbled my way through that, so I really can't offer intelligent directions on how to do that part, but I did use the MS PAINT program that came on my computer to manipulate the image size.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Burt:

Our weather for yesterday and today has been FANSTASTIC. Almost 70 yesterday and today I think we did break 70. Nice and clear and WARM. Too Bad the rain and cold is due back by Sat/Sun. I've been off work on a mini-vacation since Sunday, so I've gotten to enjoy it. Now I have to go back to work tomorrow and I'm not looking forward to it.

I Shoulda Been Born Rich!

Carl

PS If you can find a small picture, it really isnt very hard to do an Avatar. If you email me a small picture I can TRY to make sure it is the correct size and send it back to you to post for your avatar.

I know it has to be you to do the actual entry of your avatar.
