white noise from rear diff area.

I have what could be described as a white noise coming from the rear end of my 72 240.

soon as the car starts to roll anything over 5km/hr, it sounds like someone has left an old analogue radio on a hissy channel of static under the rear diff area. the noise is not loud and could easily be ignored with music or aggressive driving, but just slow cruising makes me wonder if there's a problem brewing under there.

at first i thought it would be just the brake shoes slightly rubbing on the drums, but the sound doesnt change with brake pressure.

I'm thinking i have a bearing in the rear end thats starting to get noisy. diff fluid is relatively new.

any thoughts would be appreciated.

is this noise normal in anyone else's 240?
