slowpoke Posted September 14, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 14, 2013 Looking for some help with my Z: 1973 240 automatic, Weber DGV carbs Idles on the choke only. Will start with the choke off but dies within a few seconds. Replaced bad HG New valve cover, intake and exhaust gasket Drained fuel Changed fuel filter New spark plugs new oil, filter and coolant Changed what vacuum lines where left (most of the emission stuff was gone) Checked for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner, didn't find anything Compression looks OK Distributor is not locked down, wires to the thermostat are cut Any suggestions on where to go from here? Thanks!
Patcon Posted September 14, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 14, 2013 Has it ever run right for you with these carbs? Or said another way is it a new problem or is this how you got the car? If it is a new problem I would check: fuel pressure, clean fresh fuel, dirt in float bowls. If it is an old problem I would check these same after I cleaned the carbs....the new fuel does not store well and may have gummed up the idle jets...Charles
slowpoke Posted September 14, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted September 14, 2013 I got the car with the carbs and this problem. It took starter spray to get it to run at all when i first got it. It starts faster and idles a little smother now on choke. Any suggestion on where to find a manual for these carbs. I have looked around but nothing so far. djwarner Posted September 14, 2013 Share #5 Posted September 14, 2013 The choke cable is connected to an idle enrichment mechanism. If the car only runs with the choke on, it is probably set up way too lean.
slowpoke Posted September 14, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted September 14, 2013 So, I should clean fiddle with the carb before i set the timing?
siteunseen Posted September 14, 2013 Share #7 Posted September 14, 2013 So, I should clean fiddle with the carb before i set the timing? You'll have to get it to idle at about 800 RPM to set it with a light. You could get the basic setting here; http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/timing/mechtime.html
slowpoke Posted September 15, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted September 15, 2013 Thanks, that search phrase helped alot. Carb clean then timing, I'll get at it tonight. After a few hours of googleing i found this Weber DGV Rebuild - bluehandsinc.com helpful for reference!
slowpoke Posted September 16, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted September 16, 2013 Cleaning the idle jets got it to idle off choke. When i stabbed the gas, it would backfire out the carbs and try to stall. Just cleaned the carbs tonight. Hopefully that clears it up. Thanks for the help so far!
Patcon Posted September 16, 2013 Share #10 Posted September 16, 2013 That sounds like progress. Very good...Charles
slowpoke Posted September 17, 2013 Author Share #11 Posted September 17, 2013 Success! Idles and runs solid now. Rolled it out of the garage on its own power for the first time....then found out the brakes are gone. Fun times ahead. Thanks for the help guys! Patcon Posted September 18, 2013 Share #12 Posted September 18, 2013 I have a question. Do the carbs seem to have a hesitation when revving from idle? I have the same DGV's on one of my Z's. It has a noticeable hesitation when revved, I suspect a vacuum leak but it may be the poor design of the intake...Charles
