Posted September 14, 201311 yr comment_431656 Looking for some help with my Z: 1973 240 automatic, Weber DGV carbs Idles on the choke only. Will start with the choke off but dies within a few seconds. Replaced bad HG New valve cover, intake and exhaust gasket Drained fuel Changed fuel filter New spark plugs new oil, filter and coolant Changed what vacuum lines where left (most of the emission stuff was gone) Checked for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner, didn't find anything Compression looks OK Distributor is not locked down, wires to the thermostat are cut Any suggestions on where to go from here? Thanks! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/47406-240z-dies-off-choke/ Share on other sites
September 14, 201311 yr comment_431657 Has it ever run right for you with these carbs? Or said another way is it a new problem or is this how you got the car? If it is a new problem I would check: fuel pressure, clean fresh fuel, dirt in float bowls. If it is an old problem I would check these same after I cleaned the carbs....the new fuel does not store well and may have gummed up the idle jets...Charles Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/47406-240z-dies-off-choke/#findComment-431657 Share on other sites
September 14, 201311 yr Author comment_431658 I got the car with the carbs and this problem. It took starter spray to get it to run at all when i first got it. It starts faster and idles a little smother now on choke. Any suggestion on where to find a manual for these carbs. I have looked around but nothing so far. September 14, 201311 yr comment_431678 The choke cable is connected to an idle enrichment mechanism. If the car only runs with the choke on, it is probably set up way too lean. September 14, 201311 yr Author comment_431680 So, I should clean fiddle with the carb before i set the timing? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/47406-240z-dies-off-choke/#findComment-431680 Share on other sites
September 14, 201311 yr comment_431704 So, I should clean fiddle with the carb before i set the timing? You'll have to get it to idle at about 800 RPM to set it with a light. You could get the basic setting here; http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/timing/mechtime.html Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/47406-240z-dies-off-choke/#findComment-431704 Share on other sites
September 15, 201311 yr Author comment_431726 Thanks, that search phrase helped alot. Carb clean then timing, I'll get at it tonight. After a few hours of googleing i found this Weber DGV Rebuild - bluehandsinc.com helpful for reference! September 16, 201311 yr Author comment_431770 Cleaning the idle jets got it to idle off choke. When i stabbed the gas, it would backfire out the carbs and try to stall. Just cleaned the carbs tonight. Hopefully that clears it up. Thanks for the help so far! September 17, 201311 yr Author comment_431834 Success! Idles and runs solid now. Rolled it out of the garage on its own power for the first time....then found out the brakes are gone. Fun times ahead. Thanks for the help guys! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/47406-240z-dies-off-choke/#findComment-431834 Share on other sites
September 18, 201311 yr comment_431896 I have a question. Do the carbs seem to have a hesitation when revving from idle? I have the same DGV's on one of my Z's. It has a noticeable hesitation when revved, I suspect a vacuum leak but it may be the poor design of the intake...Charles Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/47406-240z-dies-off-choke/#findComment-431896 Share on other sites
