DJ,

Congrats for being one of the few Americans to actually get 2 cars into a 2 car garage. As Americans' waistlines have expanded, so has their appetite for junk that ends up consuming parking spaces.

I second that. I can get both of my 240z and 300zx in the garage and still manage to walk around them. However, the "standard" American 2 car garage has shrunk over time. My house was built in the mid-90s and despite installing lots of shelving on the walls by the time I factor in my workbench, tool box, parking places for jacks, and other stuff it is a tight fit. The house I grew up in was built in the mid-70s and the garage seemed deeper and wider. My mom parked her Olds Toranado (a real FULL sized car) in the garage along with her Ford Escort. We had 2 workbenches, several shelving cabinets, lawn tools, and even 2 large trash cans. With a both cars in the garage there was more than enough room to move around. Now a days you almost have to have a 3 car garage just to have room for the stuff needed to maintain a home and park 2 cars.

I was over at a friends home the other day. He has perhaps a dozen cars in the garage at his home. What struck me as very interesting - was that he had his 1930' something Packard parked beside his 2013 Cadillac CTS.

As we looked at the Packard - it seemed huge! Then as we walked around it - I looked at the Caddy. The amazing thing was - they were both about the same over-all size. The Caddy roofline was a couple inches lower, but the Caddy was just as long, just as wide. They even both had 19 or 20" wheels.

The Packard however seemed to have far more room inside. If they hadn't been sitting side by side, I would have bet money that the Packard was at least 50% bigger..

FWIW,

Carl B.
