October 10, 201311 yr comment_433364 Thank you very much!.. perfect picturesSteve, just a couple of observations. Looking at webmanic70s picture, it looks like the nipples have split from the angular stress of the cables, and, it doesn't appear to have a lip molded into the ends of each nipple as you did with your sample. Are you sure the originals were molded with theupward slant of the nipples like the more recent grommet style?I'm probably not seeing this correctly, but just needed to ask. Too bad that someone doesn't have a good, original, example for comparison. IfI can source one, I'll certainly post any helpful information. Many thanks for all of your work in providing a much needed source for important, original parts.Dan Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/47552-70-71-owners-i-need-help-with-a-project/?&page=2#findComment-433364 Share on other sites
October 10, 201311 yr Author comment_433371 Dan, very good questions. I could not tell if straight or angled myself. If you look at the very first picture in this thread it looks like they are angled up in that picture. As far as the molded lip, every other grommet has a molded lip on the 240, even the choke cable grommet for the 510 have a molded lip, so I could not tell if after 40+ years the rubber deteriorated and lost the molded lip from a swelling effect? That is why I went molded lip. I have a lead on a early 70 choke grommet that should be coming my way in the next week or so. It will be much easier to reproduce if the nipples are straight and no lip. or if anyone want to ship me their worn out one, I will provide you with a new reproduction plus send your old one back.thanks for the input.SteveSteve, just a couple of observations. October 10, 201311 yr comment_433393 I will have a closer look at mine and let you know if I think the angle was there at the outset. It would make sense if it was because the cables arc up and over to the connectors on the carbs. I was also going comment on the moulded lip. If I bought one similar to the sample shown, I would cut the lip off to make it look more authentic. The length also appears too long. I will therefore post another pic in the morning with the tape measure showing the exact length along the angled part. It will no doubt be another part added to the shopping list. Very impressed. October 10, 201311 yr Author comment_433405 That would be great, thanks for the input. October 13, 201311 yr comment_433650 Hi Steve, I had a closer look at this grommet. It originally appears that there was no angle on this item. I pulled the cables to give them more slack and squeezed the end to close up the 'split' on mine and it seemed to be fairly straight. However I believe if you built them this way then it would only split again because the cables really need the angle which is probably why they changed the design. Below is a picture showing the length of the feeders for your reference. October 13, 201311 yr Author comment_433652 Thanks so much for all your input. I will offer them both ways, a straight version and an angled version. October 14, 201311 yr comment_433669 I'm just going to have to chime in. The later, angled version is probably still available, or can be found without too much difficulty, I am sure, in NOS condition. The only reason to want one of the early grommets, without the angular modeling and flared end of the nipple, as it seems to appear inWebmasinic70's photos, is because that is what it was "originally" for early cars.Forty year old rubber is going to dry rot and split. I can wait for the sake of acquiring a good reproduction of the authentic item. October 16, 201311 yr comment_433807 Here are some pictures of an NOS choke cable assembly that I have. Now that I've read all the posts it looks like this is the newer assembly. I'll go back to my garage to see if I have an old one in good shape. October 27, 201311 yr Author comment_434613 update: found an original 71 choke cable grommet. The nipples are straight and 10mm long, I will improve the design but it will still look just like the original once installed. It looks bad but this is what I was needing. thanks all for input and help. steve Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/47552-70-71-owners-i-need-help-with-a-project/?&page=2#findComment-434613 Share on other sites
