Loaner Dashboard shipping box

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of getting my dashboard rebuilt, but after reading how difficult it is to ship it across the country, I was wondering if anyone has a shipping box that that is built well enough (like a fiberglass golf case or wooden crate) to accommodate safe shipping more than once, and can be rented. By loaning it out to others, you could recuperate the cost of building something substantial.

You could make one from 1"X2" wood or heavier 2X4. Glue and screw the joints. Some steel strapping like this can toughen it where needed and be used like a hinge: http://www.bobgolds.com/SteelStrapping.jpg. Chicken wire or mesh is light and can protect the open areas better than wood.

Also bubble wrap the heck out of it and use the existing dash fasten points to tie it to the crate/cage.

Or

wrap it with plastic kitchen wrap then bubble wrap

put this into garbage bags

tape closed and tight

put it in a cardboard box

put some foam reinforcement in to hold it off the bottom

take it out of box

Fill bottom of box with expanding foam (good stuff)

Place again in box

Fill to 1/2 way point and let dry

Place another couple of garbage bags over the dash and foam (to make a break in the foam from top and bottom

Continue to fill the box with foam and reinforcement.

I sent out a request to the last person I sent a dash to and am waiting to hear back. He lives in Canada, I don't know what it would cost to ship it to you for him. His contact information is on ebay and his ebay ID is 514_champion

The other dash was a couple years back and went to AZ I believe. jlp

TomoHawk , Just received the following reply from champion.

"Hi Jerry,

I do still have the crate, the only thing Is that I have not yet installed the dash in my 240z so it's still in the crate. Does he need it right away?

i'm assuming it would be a good 100-150$ to ship the empty crate depending on where he is."
