Series 1 '71 blue on blue automatic - purist debate

The car in my Sig was originally blue, and I was 20 when I converted it to black. Now 20+ years later I wish I would have made it blue again. The interior paint under the panels, and carpet are still blue, and I kinda wish I would have went blue.

I say keep it blue if you keep it.

I grew up in the rust belt, in love with Z cars, and even when I was young (in 1984) a 1975 280Z my friends dad owned was a total rust bucket. Only 9 years old not worthy of fixing up. I moved to AZ in 87 and I could not believe how much cleaner = rust free, Z cars were, all the plastic and rubber were cooked but... Not knocking your find, but knowing how clean and rust free AZ, TX and CA cars are, I would be very surprised if the original owner does go for it. Also in my opinion one thing that makes any 240 more valuable, is having not been in a collision that damages part of the sub-frame and basic tub. If that's all straight, I say you have a GREAT find.

But... there is always that nostalgia factor.

1971 Datsun 240Z Series 1. Original engine and 4 spd. trans. Engine re-built approx. 60,000 miles ago. Interior: headliner, door and side panels, carpet and console in very good condition. Dash pad is cracked and seats need new foam and covers. Exterior: body is very straight but has some rust in the usual spots. Under the battery and the floors are very solid. Bumpers and glass are good. Everything works as it should with the exception of the gas gauge ( doesn't do the full sweep from full to empty). Still has the boxes behind the seats with the tool kit, jack and wheel chalks. This car runs and drives great although it could use new struts. Call Russ for more info 503-930-8976 (no e-mail)

I love the '70 and '71 blue on blue 240Zs, especially the Series I cars. However, that car in Idaho looks like it's going to take a lot to get her restored. I like that fact that it's a '70, which makes the car even more desirable, but unless it has a very low VIN, say a '69 production car, there's just way too much rust for me.

GeoJoe's Series I blue on blue car is from California with very little rust, which makes for a much less costly restoration. The car from Portland is in much better shape than the Idaho car, but the seller states that it is "has rust in all the usual places".

Cars from dry climates such as Arizona and California are really the way to go, but if you're looking for a rare car such as a blue on blue, it limits your choices.

Update on this blue on blue automatic Series 1....

Discussions underway with 2nd owner. He put about 100k on it between '81 and '91...and wants it back. Sounds like a cool business model actually.

Anyway, thought you guys might like to see some unique parts on early automatics and the quality of the underside. Overall looking good!
