Turn signals

I have been going through my electrical these past few days trying to get it all running and I am stuck at my turn signal. I have a 72 datsun 240z. I can't get any power to my turn signals the switch is brand new, but I just can't seem to get them power. My headlights, hazards, brights and all other lights work, but my turn signals are acting like they aren't getting any power at all. My relays to the turn signals are all hooked up, the single wires coming from it i am not quite postive about. Does anyone have any insight on the problem.

Either the turn signal flasher is bad or the fuse at the fuse box may LOOK good, but do a continuity test on it.

Can you hear the flasher "ticking" when you use the stalk?

When you say no turn signals, I presume you mean neither front NOR back.

That brings the problem to the dash area. The only other thing would be a bad hazard switch, or connection to the combination switch.

Thanks for the input. I have been waiting for the factory service manual, but it hasn't come yet. I have been waiting for the service manual to come, but since I have barely any patience (not a good trait), so I decide to go ahead and put my dash in without it. Big mistake. I have been doing electrical work for days. I will check out the box, and go over the wiring again.

Thanks

I had a problem with my turn signals. It turned out to be a worn assembly/switch on the end of the indicator stick. I would only indicate right if i pushed it really hard.

So i pulled it out the whole assembly, loosend up the screws that held the switch on the end of the stick and repositioned it.

Now no left or right.

What had happened was the plastic bush type thing that switches the switch has worn out, so that when you push the lever it rocks a bit and doesn't fully push the switch.

So i wedged a thin piece of plastic between the metal part that holds the lever, and the plastic bush thing.

Now it works fine.

try pulling the switch off the stalk and operating the switch direclty with it attached to the car to see if thats the problem.

Do you have a multimeter or test lamp to see if there is actually any power there?

Thanks so much for the picture it really help. Last night I had no headlights so I went to mess my wires and one touch and the came back on. So I think my problem is wiring. Later that night I went to trun on my blinkers and they worked. Well almost they come on but just don't blink. So I think my problem is wiring because its also conflicted with the picture Mr Camouflage sent me. I have to unplug everything anyways to fix my heater core, funny story I will post it in the story forum. But anyways thanks for all the help.

My headlights didnt work either when i bought my zed.

When i started playing it, the headlights flashed once, but i couldnt get them to come on again.

When i pulled the switch out, the white and red power wire solder joint had come apart. Also the switch was worn internally. I was able to replace the worn lug with a plastic one i made. Now the switch works, but i havent put it back in the car yet. Hope it doesn't melt.

Heres a pic of how my switch is wired. Its an Aussie car '72. I dont think the wiring of the US cars would be any different for the headlights.

I have read a couple of replys where guys are rebuilding the T/S switches. Is there a step by step write-up that explains it for those of us who are electrically challenged? I have all my lights working except my turn signals and dash lights. I also have a new flasher. The hazards work fine just not the dash or T/S. any suggestions? TIA

Sounds like a faulty turn signal switch, if the hazards still work.

Try connecting the solder points on the back of the switch of the green wire to the white wire with the black stripe with a screwdriver and see if the lights come on. Have the ignition on or nothing will happen. If it works the problem is in the switch and you'll have to fix it or replace it. If it doesn't work, then the problam is elsewhere.

I'm having similar problems in that my left signals work fine, my emergency flashers all work, but my right signals don't work at all. I have suspected a faulty switch. (In fact, to make it more confusing and electrically mysterious, if I have the turn signal stalk positioned for a right turn and I press the brakes, the brake lights don't come on.)

What do you have to disassemble to get to the switch?

Some progress. I took off the shroud and removed the switch. A wire had come unsoldered. I resoldered it and now the dash indicator and all signals work except the right rear. There is no more interaction between the right turn switch position and the brake lights. The right rear still flashes (both bulbs) for the emergency flasher. For good measure I changed all of the fuses (two had very loose caps).

It is now time for the volt ohm meter.
