jwhite927458 Posted November 3, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 3, 2013 Hey All, I just recently purchased a 280z, I am so far happy with my purchase. The kid I bought it from said that he hasnt been able to get it running. I did a little diagnosing today and came to the conclusion that the gas pump isn't getting power.....and then I realized that nothing is getting power. Except for the starter and headlights. No gauges, no interior lights, no wipers, no blinkers, etc. I have checked the fuseable link and they all look good. Everything seems to be hooked up. I just put a brand new battery in. If anyone has any recommendations i'd be very appreciative. Thanks,Jeremy

EuroDat Posted November 3, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 3, 2013 I dont know which year your 280z is, but you can download a colour wiring diagram for the 77 model here: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/electrical-s30/13131-color-wiring-diagram-280z.htmlThere is also one for the 76 model. If you search the forum for member: sridout you will find it.Chas

EuroDat Posted November 3, 2013 Share #6 Posted November 3, 2013 Try this one. Its for the 78. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/misc-s30/44992-somewhat-color-wiring-diagram-1978-280zs-enjoy.htmlThe colour versions make it so much easier to diagnose.Goodluck with your problem.Chas
Zed Head Posted November 3, 2013 Share #7 Posted November 3, 2013 Don't forget the basic resource - Index of /FSMAnd, if you're listening for the fuel pump or checking power to the pump when the key is On, that's not how they work.

The FSM also has easy to follow drawings of connectors, relays etc and how they are mounted. If your checking the pump you need to open the AFM. I use the handle of a large screwdriver via the air cleaner inlet to hold it open. And a tag on the steering wheel to remind me its in there.Chas
Zed Head Posted November 3, 2013 Share #9 Posted November 3, 2013 Aaccck. 1978 went to the oil pump switch or alternator power to trigger the pump relay. Each year has it's own little tricks. For 78, removing the small wire at the starter and turning the key to Start might work.Z cars that have sat also have their own little problems. Like the combination and dimmer switches getting tarnished and not passing current. To the OP, how long did the car sit before you got it? Of course, it "ran when parked" but that doesn't matter much. SteveJ Posted November 3, 2013 Share #11 Posted November 3, 2013 Look good does not necessarily mean they are good. Did you remove them and check them with an ohmmeter? Did you use a voltmeter to see where you do/don't have voltage?
jwhite927458 Posted November 3, 2013 Author Share #12 Posted November 3, 2013 ZedHead, the kid i bought it from didn't really seem to know much about it. He said he bought it and parked it for a little over a year (what's the point of buying it?) And was never able to get it running. Somethings I noticed when I was looking it over, he didn't have the MAF sensor hooked up and the fuel pressure regulator was replaced and the fuel pump was replaced. However I don't think he realized now nothing was getting power. SteveJ you have a point, I shouldn't base it off of visual there could certainly be underlying problems, which I am assuming there is. I am going to begin going through the harness little by little, based on the write up that eurodat sent me. My next step was going to be to test for voltage, like I said these were just observations that I came across. Thanks again guys for the replys so far extremely helpful.
