Just bought and started restoration my 240Z.I think there are some switches and indicators are missing on the console and the dash.

Could anyone help me to complete the set up?.

Just saw this post, and from what you are writing, it seems that you have a LATE 71 or early 72 console, as those were the ones that had light indicators for the choke. I'm not sure but it may be that the rear window defog was there as well.

Check the build date on your car and let us know what that is as that makes a key difference.

My Z is 2/71 # HLS30 222272 5-Speed and it has deck type vents.It also has defogger . I think it was put together at the time of modifications from 70 to 71.

And now I have to admit that I need some clarification and some help.

The VIN number you gave is extremely high for the enumeration we've seen, so I hope Alan H sees this post for his knowledgeable input.

In the U.S. in early 71 we noticed a change in the center console. The first console we had looked like this:

Unfortunately the stick shift hides the toggle switches and lights. I'll see if I can find a better picture.

However, you mention a 5 speed, although that wouldn't matter as far as the console is concerned, it makes it difficult to ascertain what year car you have. You might be correct for a European vehicle, but it conflicts with what I know.

It being manufactured in 70 to 71, we need to get Alan's input on this as he can clarify what differences from the U.S. market you would have seen.

A VIN that high, according to Datsun Z club would make it an early 280Z. The 5spd would have been swaped in since the 4spd was standard. As far as the "deck vents" (I assume you are talking about the hatch vents) the hatch was prolly put on from a '70 or early '71 car.

Check the VIN, cause if it is accurate, there has been some BAD tampering with the VIN plate. Not good. Make sure the VIN in the door matches the VIN on the dash. There should also be another VIN placard in the engine compartment. make sure all of these match up, and that the car was not clipped years ago.

I hope Alan has his radar turned on.

Where was it exported to, Europe, UK or ???

With all respects, don't take what "smokey"has written as gospel as he is quoting LHD material which has little or no relevence to RHD's.

5 Speeds where OEM in all Australian imports and I believe that to be the case for Europe/UK as well.

Why the USA got 4 speed is not known, maybe to keep the price down, who knows? Who cares?

Like wise consoles changed or where different from our American Cousins believe is correct for that time period.

Now before some else takes a big stick to your car, I'll await the "blip"on the screen from the UK! Standby for further details.......

I think he may have put one too many 2's in the VIN number, which would bring it to what it should be for a 2/71 HLS-30.

Mine is a 11/70 HLS-30 with a VIN just under 15xxx, so his would be about right at 22272.

If it is an HLS30 car, it would have had a 4 speed, correct? Weren't most of the HLS30 cars sent to the US? If his was a European delivered car, wouldn't it have been an HS30 Vin number? But then aren't there some countries in Europe that use LHD's as we do? Which would mean an HLS30 would be the correct VIN number....

If it is a HLS30, and the VIN is 22272, it should have a defrost switch that is illuminated as mine does. I think the only non-illuminated defrost switches would have been only on the early build months of 70.

But, I'm just guessing from the info posted so far...

Sorry to pile into this a bit late. Enrique alerted me to the original post.

I think that 2Many is right, and that Suleyman has misquoted the VIN number with an extra 2 in it. Suleyman, can you check that out and reconfirm?

I've heard that some cars were exported to territories like Turkey ( also Greece and Cyprus ) and they were, in keeping with the custom in those countries, LHD - so it would have an "HLS30" VIN prefix.

However, they would have been similar in spec. to the other European LHD export versions in having the 5-speed transmission and suitable diff. ratio.

By all accounts these cars were quite highly specced in comparison to the USA / North American market versions, with the local importers sometimes specifying Factory "Sports Option" parts as standard and Japanese-market options like front and rear spoilers, passenger footrests and headlamp covers. This was probably an attempt to justify the high prices that they had to charge for the cars in their local markets, with very high Import Taxes and sometimes Import restrictions to contend with. These added up to make an imported Z car the same price on the showroom floor as a Porsche 911..................

These specialist-market cars are a bit of a minefield when it comes to identification and parts sourcing, and I've sometimes heard 'experts' saying that they were never officially imported into those markets. However, it seems that Nissan was all ears when it came to dealing with their importers and distributors in certain countries, and did knock out a few 'specials' for those with the better relationships. I can't help thinking that the numbers exported to countries like Turkey, Greece and Cyprus must have been pretty small.

A friend of mine here in the UK owns a '72 car that he personally imported from Cyprus a while back. It was in great condition bodywise, and was RHD. I presume Cyprus drives on the left? Surely Suleyman's car will be pretty much rust free?

Suleyman, if you could re-check your VIN number and get back to us it might help to clear this up a little. I am presuming that your car was an original import to Turkey when it was new, and has not been brought in from another country?

Regarding missing switchgear and their associated lighting, if we can establish exactly what you need then there might be a chance that I can help you. I have a fair few bits and pieces knocking around in my garages and seeing as London is closer to Turkey that anywhere in the USA or Australia then it might make more sense for me to get them to you than anyone else? I'm sure I have the illuminated rear-window defogger switch and stuff like that.

Hey, thats my car. Its a 72. It has the imprints in the plastic for switches and lights, but none are fitted.
