Posted November 26, 201311 yr comment_436884 Hello matesWith the temps in the west where I live getting cooler I've noticed something rather interesting about my Z. When the car is started from a cold start - as in left sitting for a few horus and the motor is under 100 degrees - the engine will squeak on startup and run rather poorly for a few minutes. Poorly meaning this: if I press on the gas to raise the idle of rinstance the car will stumble. This only lasts a few moments - the poor running that is - and the said squeaking noise from the engine only lasts a few minutes. Once the engines been running maybe 5 minutes tops the noise is gone. The engine does idle rather low maybe 600 or so RPMs when I first start her - usually sits at 1000 when nice and warm. Anyone have any ideas? Could it be an exhuast leak that disipates as the engine gets warmer? Could it be something on the belt? Could it be a vacuum leak? Thanks guysJan Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48033-squeaking-on-startup/ Share on other sites
November 27, 201311 yr comment_436950 I doubt you'd hear an intake leak. A small exhaust leak at the cylinder head would most likely produce a loud tap-tap-tap sound, like a valve gone bad, except without the chugging exhaust. My vote would be a belt squeak. Belts squeak the most when they're cold. Perhaps try some belt dressing? November 27, 201311 yr comment_436956 My car does the same thing. Thought it was normal. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48033-squeaking-on-startup/#findComment-436956 Share on other sites
November 27, 201311 yr comment_436975 Mine used to do that, it was the fan belt. Sprayed some ''Belt Dressing'' on it, sound went away. Replaced the belt. November 28, 201311 yr Author comment_437022 I know this is a rather dumb question. If hypothetically speaking it is an intake leak (or exhaust) would it be fine to drive with? The engineer in me can see the issue with having a leak, but I really don't have the energy to take the manifolds off AGAIN and replace the gasket AGAIN only to have this happen a few months down the road. I'll look into the belt this weekend when I have a day off. November 28, 201311 yr comment_437044 Eliminate the belt by taking it off before cold start..... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48033-squeaking-on-startup/#findComment-437044 Share on other sites
November 28, 201311 yr comment_437047 Eliminate the belt by taking it off before cold start.....Like he said... Process of elimination. I doubt it is induction or exhaust Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48033-squeaking-on-startup/#findComment-437047 Share on other sites
