Undercoating also has a function of protection against road debris , and all sorts of functions... if only paint, it will easily be damaged.

What you think the wheel will throw around in the wheel well when driving on the road ?

I don't disagree that undercoat can protect against road debris, as well as providing some sound deadening. But it also has the disadvantage of hiding corrosion you might otherwise see & repair before I gets bad.

Personally, I'm always wondering what's going-on under the undercoat on my Z. I think it's easier, (and cheaper), to touch-up paint than repair rust damage. Of course, this assumes the owner inspects the undercarriage at least annually...

It's a bit of a "which devil do you chose" situation with pros & cons for both approaches. I'd certainly want undercoat if it was a rally car or driven on gravel roads!

My Series 1 240 has never had undercoat and the underside is in good condition. It has the same orange on the bottom as everywhere else. Of course it has spent much time on salted or gravel roads and has spent most if not all of it's life in the California.

That should have been "... NOT spent much time on salted or gravel roads and has spent most if not all of it's life in the California.
