Posted December 31, 201311 yr comment_438826 Hey guys, this is actually my first post here and just liked to give a little basic info first. I currently own a '78 280z and am located in SoCal. I recently just got the car back from Mike's Z Shop in Whittier (they do great work by the way and very friendly) after completing a transmission overhaul. This problem started occurring last night, a couple days after i got the car back so i don't think it has anything to do with that issue. So usually when i start my Z up I give it a little gas to ease the start up (also note that I am running triple webers) but last night as I did the same thing I got a loud chirping noise in return. I drove the car home fine and noticed the sound only occurs towards the low-mid rpm when I give it gas in neutral. If anyone have any insights as to what might be going on here, I'd greatly appreciate it!It's nice to meet you all and have a wonderful New Years Eve!-Matt Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48262-chirping-sound-when-accelerating-in-neutral/ Share on other sites

January 1, 201411 yr Author comment_438837 Thanks for the input guys! I'll definitely check those two things out. As far as how urgent this issue is, am I in any immediate danger as far as driving it to my Z guy? January 2, 201411 yr comment_438893 No danger. All you risk is a bit of wear on the belts, but a trip across town is no biggie. FAIW, it's a very easy job to tighten the belt(s) yourself. You can also try spraying the belts with a bit of belt dressing. January 2, 201411 yr comment_438909 My guess it's the alternator bearing(s) . Hand check that the pulley turns smoothly without the belt installed.Just my brand new 2014 2 cents worth - even if Canada don't make 'em anymore ! January 3, 201411 yr Author comment_438975 thanks for the input guys! it turned out to be a bad harmonic balancer which is a little more serious than just the belt issue but i made it to the shop just fine! January 3, 201411 yr comment_438985 Wow... spooky! I had just mentioned a possible harmonic balancer issue to someone in another thread! I'm glad everything came out OK. Hope your wallet isn't too much lighter.
