Vintage Gen II Mini vs Compac for 1972 240Z

Okay, i´m about to make the decision on purchasing the Vintage Air Gen II Mini or the Compac kit for my 1972 Datsun 240z.

The weather down here is 31 degrees Celsius with 62% of humidity. The kit i choose must bring a powerfull compressor, low noise and cool the cabin sufficiently. Beside of the above it must fit the dash with minor modifications and its controls can be modify to be used with the original Heater Panel Control indash.

Any opinions?

I have installed both, and from what I can tell, they use identical internal components, and should perform the same. The slight re-packaging of the mini with the fan housing vertical rather than horizontally appears to the only difference. I prefer the mini myself for fitment. Any size reduction is s good thing, and if you decide to duct the fresh air vent into the fan, its easier with the the mini with the fan inlet directly facing the vent hole in the cowl.

Mine kept me cool in Phoenix at 104F with the fan on low or medium and the temp no more than half way to full cold. The low speed is about 20% faster than the stock fan on high. Its actually too fast for most situations in my usual location here in Calgary, I've been meaning to put a pulse-width modulated voltage controller on it to slow it down. You likely won't need to do that.

I just contacted Dreamers Rods & Pickups N.W. - The Source for Chevy and Ford Restoration and Performance Parts. which is a company that carries this evaporator and they have asked me the following questions:

What finish compressor would i like? V-belt or serpentine?

Billet aluminium control or just an ABS plastic pod?

Rubber A7C lines or stainless braided and plastic vents or billet?

WHy all these questions? Isnt there a company that sells a straight forward kit? So much hassle to purchase this kit online?

As you've noted, you have unique requirements and expectations that you feel preclude the use of the readily available "straight forward kit".

There is little to no hassle to use one of the ready made kits available for the Datsun Z from Courtesy or MSA. Custom fabrication to meet your somewhat unique requirements results in "hassle". Have you contacted Vintage Air directly?

When you raise the bar, you have to jump a little higher.

What finish compressor would i like? V-belt or serpentine? - Compressors come with a variety of pulleys to match those in your car. They probably haven't seen an S30 and don't realize you need a V belt pulley.

Billet aluminium control or just an ABS plastic pod? - This is a matter of Bling? Ya pays ya money and takes ya choice.

Rubber A7C lines or stainless braided and plastic vents or billet? - Again, a matter of bling.

WHy all these questions? - As a provider of AC to Hot Rodders and Customizers, Vintage Air has developed kits for many cars including the Bling Meisters. But the S30 in not one of them. However, Vintage Air systems can be used on your car. Want to blow your mind with options, download their catalog.
