Got a suprise after I got my 260z freshly painted

Got my car freshly painted at the body shop and all was looking great.

I then took it to the mechanic shop to get my engine put back in. However, before it could go back it, we found a piece of wood and bondo in the floor pans. So upon taking off the mastic out of the interior, this is what was found....

Not happy that this is still on my car after the it was repainted but I couldn't be happier that Gary found it for me and will be fixing it for me. I will be even happier when my Z is completely rust free.

I guess my interior upgrades will have to wait a little while before I get to them.

Bummer! The sad thing is that, depending on how hard they worked at covering it up, it wouldn't have taken them much more time to just patch in the few pieces of sheet metal. I had a very similar experience as well & still have a little rust there. it's just a small amount on mine, but still...it's annoying.

Try to look at it this way....the exterior panels are perfect. The stuff under the carpets is an easy fix and can be sealed and painted to get rid of the rust that is there. I ( my family) has had rust appear after body work at least on 2 different cars, but it was in areas the the exterior paint didn't show....we just did a good repair and moved onward. DATSUN'S rust.....unfortunately.

I'm not making light of your plight....but these cars weren't "dipped" from the factory, and at the time, they weren't undercoated or rustproofed at all. My dad had to jack up the '76 when new, pull the wheels and undercoat with areosol undercoating cans when it was new. Sucks, but it is what it is. My suggestion, is to coat BOTH sides with POR-15 after you weld the new floors in. The body work looks fantastic! Try to stay positive....everything will work out just fine. POR 15 the new floors in on BOTH sides and no more rust! (at least there :S ) We had a 2000 Roadster that after the body work a bubble developed! (under the fender at the tip thank GOD) We poked it with a needle filled it full of WD-40 and when dry closed up the needle hole with touch up paint! never had another problem.....these darn DATSUNS just rust!

Well, here is the full extent of my floor pans. Gary Cook (mechanic) told me that the previous owner had put tar paper on the floors and then put mastic and undercoating on the car to cover all the rust. Fortunately for me, he can fix it all without having to replace the entire floor pans. I would have never imagined that my floors would have looked so bad but I couldn't have made a better decision for a mechanic. My Z is in the best of hands, for sure.

believe it or not, this is good news. rust in SEAMS is a real bitch. Flat panels, especially when replacemnt panels are available is the best of the situation at hand.

Remember.....POR-15...on BOTH sides!

I absolutely know it's good news. That's why I'm happy to have it as minimal as it is with my Z. I just can't wait to see her all done and pretty. The cost and time will all be worth it.

I'm not 100% what the shop is going to be putting on it to protect it but I'm sure it will be POR-15 or something of the same idea.
