BackDoorz Posted January 14, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2014 Thought I would share this. I was looking for a lens cover to replace the one that disintegrated on my under hood inspection light. Could not find just the lens, but could find the whole light itself. Not wanting to spend that much money, I thought I might be able to come up with something else. I looked in several drug stores and found several plastic caps on various types of hair products, body sprays, and etc. I found a cap from a Neutrogena Body Mist spray can that was the same diameter as the light. If you notice on the light itself, there are four tabs that help hold the lens cover in. There is also a rubber gasket/washer inside. I bent the four tabs out so as to allow the plastic cap to go in. The fit was good. The plastic cap was too clear for me. So I used some 400 grit sand paper and “scuffed†up the plastic cap so as to make it look frosted. This gave me the look I wanted. I put everything together and bent the tabs back in to hold the new lens cover in place. This may not be "original", but it works for me. I have attached some pictures. TomoHawk Posted November 13, 2016 Share #4 Posted November 13, 2016 I have recently thought of this myself... After making a cardboard pattern of the bottom of the plastic dome, I browsed the isles with the body sprays, hairsprays, deodorants, etc. and found a bottle of Neutrogena facial cleanser at a local discount grocery store. The clear cap matched the pattern fairly well, so I bought the bottle. When I got home, I found out that it fits perfectly over the old dome. Now I only need to trim the old dome close to the base, and glue the new one onto it. It's too bad the kids don't visit any more, as they might be able to use the ($6 bottle of ) facial cleanser, so it went into the trashcan. It would be nice to have a better replacement for the dome, probably made of lexan (something that won't discolor from heat or underhood fluids. EuroDat Posted November 13, 2016 Share #5 Posted November 13, 2016 Like the ingenuity. Isn't there an energy drink bottle with a dome end that fits? I think there was a thread on that somewhere here as well.
TomoHawk Posted November 13, 2016 Share #6 Posted November 13, 2016 Go your local super store that stocks every kind of energy drink and tell us which one it is.

This seems a bit presumptuous. You have the need.. Seems like this would be a place where some ingenuity and some LED bulbs could result in an improved system. Maybe even a light with a focusable lens, like the LED flashlights. The stock system really isn't a lot of help, especially n a metro area where the street lights cause sharp shadows. TomoHawk Posted November 13, 2016 Share #8 Posted November 13, 2016 (edited) I am in no need for a dome now.. A retractable wire would be nice too, but then it might be a little too modern. The LEDs would be the limit of the modern-ness. Edited November 13, 2016 by TomoHawk

TomoHawk Posted November 13, 2016 Share #10 Posted November 13, 2016 I like the idea of a bulb with both radial LED chips and a projector end.
zKars Posted November 14, 2016 Share #11 Posted November 14, 2016 Oh, just put a long strip of LED's on the hood lip that turns on when you open it, and leave that poor little light alone. That light has more period character than any other Datsun part.
