Hi all,

I cut an 8X12 inch piece of sheet metal out of a parts car using an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel and a jigsaw for a couple of small spots where the angle grinder couldn't reach. The resulting edge where both machines cut is irregular, how can the edge be made straighter or cut straighter in the first place so it looks nice? I could use a long hand file for the finished edge but I am hoping there is a better way.

If the panel is off, just use a square, scribe and black marker to mark then colour the area to grind off. Take your time and grind the inked part off.

You could also try a metal shear if the edge is straight.

This tool is perfect for your job and I find I use mine all the time for various things,

What John said, but with an angle grinder, it is easier if you lightly cut (score) the entire line first, and then gradually go deeper and deeper with multiple passes. That way the grinding disc won't get "off track" by being on the wrong line.

Thanks for the great ideas. I did go buy a belt sander this morning before I saw all of the replies. I sometimes get stuck with the idea I have to use what I have at hand. I will remember all of the ideas for other work later on.

If you have an oxy-acetylene torch and the parts are located so you can get the torch tip parallel and in plane with the jagged edge, let the metal get red hot and give it a blast. If all goes well it should cut the edge in a nice straight line. Takes some practice though. Works good on a steel angle or a piece of rebar for example. Makes a rounded edge compared to a saw or shears. Good for fixing an edge that was butchered with the torch.
