Posted February 6, 201411 yr comment_441176 I am looking to buy a clutch LSD r160 from an old subaru any thoughts ? Is the LSD worth the 400$ ? I assume my handling will improve alone with some front and back sway bars. From what i read it will handle up to 200 hp. I may one day go to a turbo set up but nothing too crazy just stock. thanks for any input Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48520-subby-r160-lsd/ Share on other sites
February 6, 201411 yr comment_441180 Got to becareful what year you get. If I remember correctly only certain years allow you to swap out our halfshafts. If it's a direct swap, then 400$ isn't terrible. I think some 510 guy was running 400hp with that diff. Google around about that diff and you find some application guides for our datsuns. February 6, 201411 yr comment_441183 Since the u-joints are replaceable I wonder if you could combine half-shafts to make a hybrid shaft that would work. Subie stub and flange on one side of the joint and the 240Z shaft, u-joint and flange on the other. It would only work if the u-joint was common or a suitable joint could be sourced. February 6, 201411 yr comment_441186 Here's a link to JMortensen's diff opus. Says the R160 is a straight bolt-in swap for an R180. Also has a comment about capacity.Differential / CV / LSD / HP / Torque / R160 / R180 / R200 / R230 / Diff Mount - Drivetrain - HybridZ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48520-subby-r160-lsd/#findComment-441186 Share on other sites
February 7, 201411 yr Author comment_441201 Well ... never mind the dude just sold his last 2. apparently they come from Japan and use the same spline as the 240. thats about all I know thanks for the info Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48520-subby-r160-lsd/#findComment-441201 Share on other sites
February 7, 201411 yr comment_441203 For future reference, it would need to be a pre 1999 diff to have bolt in stub axles. They went to viscous type after that and our halfshafts won't work. I believe all the pre 99's were clutch type. search on the Ratsun sites for further info Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48520-subby-r160-lsd/#findComment-441203 Share on other sites
February 7, 201411 yr Author comment_441212 Thanks for the info . Ratsun has been a big help looks they have the same spline count. If I was understanding it correctly he was taking out the viscous type out and putting a clutch style lsd in. May have found another I will keep you posted.
