Jeff G 78 Posted February 27, 2014 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2014 What's with the outrageous prices people are asking for S30's these days? Take a look at the 20 or so ads on this site. There is an average condition, non-detailed '78 2+2 auto for $10k and well restored, but resto-modded '78 coupe for a whopping $69k. Most of the asking prices are in the teens and they are not as nice as most of our cars. I know these are just asking prices, but they are crazy high. Guy's cars would each be worth a bazillion, kajillion dollars compared to those cars.1969 to 1978 Datsun For Sale on ClassicCars.com - 23 Available
zKars Posted February 27, 2014 Share #2 Posted February 27, 2014 Relax. Asking prices have nothing to do with the market value. Remember it's the buyers that determine the value, not sellers. The fact that they are asking more than we perceive as the current value is merely a sign that sellers believe the value of these cars is rising or they are delusional. You can ask whatever you want for your car, but in the end, when you need it gone, you will sell it at the actual market value in your area, ie what a buyer is actually willing to give you for it on that fateful day. What is frustrating for those of us trying to get a handle on market value, is that you rarely get to know the actual selling price. We have had a couple of these "crazy asking prices" scenarios in our area recently too. All of them have not sold and neither have had any offers within spitting distance. The sellers are very concerned about this as they firmly believe their asking price is fair based on money and effort spent and quality of the resulting projects. What they fail to understand is that none of that matters a hoot... The other one that comes to mind has been repeatably putting their "car" up for sale for a high asking price, not having it sell, taking the ad down after a few weeks, then repeating the process again at the exact same price. I think we are on the fifth or sixth cycle now over a couple of years. Either they really don't want to sell their car, or they don't get that the market value is below their asking price. Now if we all agree to ask 2 or 3 times what the market says our cars are worth, then the buyers will have no choice but to pay the inflated prices if they want one. Wait, I think you call that "price fixing".... Isn't there jail time involved in that? Guess we're stuck with a buyers market for now....
siteunseen Posted February 27, 2014 Share #3 Posted February 27, 2014 I see that too! Mr Beck said in a post the other day that $5,000 would buy a rust bucket down in Florida. I got a steal on mine.

Diseazd Posted February 27, 2014 Share #7 Posted February 27, 2014 (edited) Wow! Even Carl's value is rising! "Mr" Beck indeed! Puff your chest out Carl .......Jeff..You can have your choice for a bizillion! A pretty accurate pricing guide that I've found is that an early 240Z is worth about 75% of what you've invested......not counting your own time! Willoughby Z Posted February 27, 2014 Share #9 Posted February 27, 2014 It's not the prices in ads that bother me, going with what zKars wrote. It's the ads themselves- filthy engine bays and interiors ("Restored! Recently refreshed!), misstatements/ignorance (V6!, wrong model), etc... olzed Posted February 27, 2014 Share #11 Posted February 27, 2014 (edited) Top bid $31,500 NZD Reserve was $34500Given the exchange rate, this cars top bid got to 26,500 USD. Values seem to be rising in NZ probably due to the fact that the 240z is quite a rare car here.Nissan 240Z 1972 | Trade Me Edited February 27, 2014 by olzed
Mark Maras Posted February 27, 2014 Share #12 Posted February 27, 2014 The question that arises in my mind is, how much does it cost to ship a Z to NZ? I imagine a left hand drive there would be as desirable as a right hand drive here.
