Posted March 5, 201411 yr comment_442745 Hey all,So recently my '74 260z started to smell strongly of gas inside the people compartment whenever I turn off the engine. I don't see any fuel dripping under the car, and I haven't noticed any performance issues or change in engine/exhaust sound to indicate either a loss in fuel pressure or an exhaust leak. Anyone had experience with something like this or have suggestions of where to investigate? Thanks! March 5, 201411 yr comment_442751 Only when you turn the engine off? Any odor if the car has been sitting for a while? Does it get any worse if your gas tank is full versus empty? A common culprit is the rats nest of vapor recovery lines that live in the back of the car, but that doesn't have a lot to do with whether the engine is running or not. March 5, 201411 yr Author comment_442752 I primarily notice it when I turn it off. However, It's pretty much whenever the car isn't in motion. So maybe just moving helps circulate the air so it isn't as noticeable. And yes, it's quite noticeable after the car has sat in the sun. So from those vapor lines seem like a good place to look. Thanks! I'll get back tomorrow to see if I find something back there Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/48690-fuel-leak-or-exhaust-leak/#findComment-442752 Share on other sites
March 5, 201411 yr comment_442767 Replacing the vent lines solved the fuel vapour problem in my '73. The worst hose was the driver side rear one in vicinity of item 36 in Capt 0's image above. The hose was so bad, that with a full tank, the fuel would pour out under accel. March 5, 201411 yr comment_442777 Also check the seam sealant around the recess for the gas door (you need to pull the interior plastic liner for this). My car had a large leak there which allowed vapors escaping from the filler neck to enter the cabin.
