For what it is worth I had my Borg Warner T5 tranny professionally rebuilt a few years ago and installed and BM short shifter. The total cost was $999. I would rebuild and then at least you know you have a very good tranny if you are going to keep the car for a while.

I have a 79 5 speed that needs a rebuild(won't go into 5th) I'd be will to let someone have for the shipping cost, also has no speedo gear.

Get a 5 speed from a ZX and rebuild it while you still have the functioning tranny in your car. I paid around $250.00 for my tranny off Craigslist, and about $130.00 for the rebuild kit.

Keep in mind, that once you have the 5 speed (particularly with the overdrive) you will want to swap out the stock 3.36 with some shorter gears, unless you've already done that.

I have a used closed ratio I will let go for 300 +ship. I was told it was from a running car. I have the same set up as you 3.9 STI diff with closed ratio . I never ran the rear with a 4 speed but imagine it would be rough on the interstate but 4th gear is fun for passing . Just did all at once. I just grabbed a used trans and put it in no problems yet ...

I am getting this one looked at by a professional Z mechanic well known in Houston. His prices are VERY reasonable. Basically cheaper than if I were to ship it back to Zcarsource and back. So I am giving him a try. I am feeling a bit shameful. I was going to install my Type A and then take my time and rebuild this one, but there is a track day on the 29th I am trying to get into. Since I sold my 2013 Golf R and bought a 2013 F150 King Ranch 4x4 this week, My Z is my only track toy. I just do not have time in the next 2 weeks to rebuild it. But my search for a 5 speed continues.
