Posted April 29, 201410 yr comment_446858 Hey guys,Could anyone else check your A/C when it is operating?Specifically I am wondering if you can feel any air blowing out of the side(heater) door next to the gas pedal when you have your AC Blowing cold.I think my air Mode Door is not closed completely and letting some of the high speed air out thru the heater door rather than getting the full velocity thru the AC vents.I need as much flow as possible! Thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49142-1978-datsun-280z-air-conditioner-question/ Share on other sites
April 30, 201410 yr comment_446888 When you're in A/C there shouldn't be anything getting through the heater core and coming out the floor holes. All the air should be coming out of the vents in the dash. Sounds like you might need some new sealing foam gasketing inside you're air box. Another option might be a vacuum problem with one of your door actuators.I don't have A/C so mine's all mechanical, but I believe the A/C equipped cars used both cables and vacuum to actuate the doors. Not sure if the door at the top that blocks off everything but the dash vents is mechanical or vacuum on your car. May 10, 201410 yr comment_447576 Check the vacuum tubing all around the vacuum canister, the mag solenoids and underneath the bracket for the solenoids, the T fiittng for the tubing. I can almost guaranty the tubing is split or not connected properly. May 10, 201410 yr comment_447578 On the 76 those two heater doors are mechanical. The 78 diagram seems to show the same. You can see if they're open or closed by eye, and manipulate them with the engine off, just move the lever from Defrost (closed) to any other setting (open). Do you have the little knobs in the center of the vents pushed in to open them? And are your hoses still connected. Mine are old and inflexible, fit poorly, and get knocked off easily if I dink around under the dash. I've had my carpet get stuck in the doors and keep them open. It's cramped down there. Edit - used the Snip tool (a pretty cool gadget) to add a picture. May 17, 201410 yr Author comment_448008 Finally got around to getting under the dash yet again.I found that the mode door actuator spring(driver side) was just dangling, off of the hook it is supposed to be connected to. The hook was missing 1 of 2 screws, which allowed it to pivot up and let the spring slip off.Added new screw and re-attached the spring. Now we are Blowing Cold and Fast! with no air going to the floor.
