Posted June 11, 201410 yr comment_449698 Hi!I have a 240z with a 5 speed transmission swap. The transmission has new oil in it and works fine in all gears including reverse, but when I am pulling it out of 5th gear I have to be really careful not to pull the stick too far straight backwards to prevent it from grinding on the reverse gear:rolleyes:It seems like there is a blocking that is missing or something? Any advice?Regards,Tomzern Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49433-5-speed-transmission-grinds-on-reverse-when-i-pull-it-out-of-5th-gear-why/ Share on other sites

June 12, 201410 yr comment_449720 It helped me a little to avoid tapping reverse when pulling out of 5th when I put the old very stiff shift boot back on. I had been having the tap reverse issue more when I was driving without the boot. Link didn't work for me but it might be just the ipad I am using. Don't know if the link below to that same thread is any better.http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/engine-drivetrain-s30/49675-weak-return-center-spring.html Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49433-5-speed-transmission-grinds-on-reverse-when-i-pull-it-out-of-5th-gear-why/#findComment-449720 Share on other sites
June 12, 201410 yr comment_449722 Your problem is caused by a worn, broken or missing detent spring on the bottom selector. Its POS#9 in the attachment. You should feel the detent working when it centers in the neutral section of the gate. Its easy to check it with the transmission still in the car. There are two plugs on the side of the metal centre section. The bottom one is for reverse/5th. Check the spring and ball are in good condition. You can also compare it with the one in 3rd/4th which is the top plug on the side. 1st/2nd is on top and hard to get out while transmission is in the car without a magnet. If the gear shift doesn't pop over and line up with 3rd - 4th then it will be the centre return spring POS#26 in the attachment. June 13, 201410 yr Author comment_449753 Thanks guys! I'll check the springs and hopefully I will find the problem there:)And I know I probably should have searched before I asked, but some times it's hard to even know what to search for:/Kind regards,Tomzern Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49433-5-speed-transmission-grinds-on-reverse-when-i-pull-it-out-of-5th-gear-why/#findComment-449753 Share on other sites
