Headed In Vegas - Z Things To Do?

Recommended Posts

I'm headed to Vegas next week for a couple days. Never been there before and I'm looking for suggestions.

Anything Z related there that I have to do while I'm out there?

I'm flying both ways, so it's not like I can carry a hood home with me, but are there good junkyards in the area that I could peruse while I'm there? I'm so used to seeing nothing but new cars in the yards around me because everything else rusts to death.

Anyone here local to the Vegas area?

I've started a list and here's some of things I'd like to try to find time to do:

Grand Canyon

Hoover Dam

Banger Brewing (Found lots of "brewpubs", but this one seems like beer is primary and gambling is secondary)

Tenaya Creek Brewery (same as above)

Las Vegas' Block 16

Oldenburg Flashlight at University of Nevada

UNLV Solar Site

Yucca Mountain Science Center

Las Vegas Natural History Museum

The Auto Collections at the Quad Casino

Springs Preserve

Nevada Test Site History Center

National Atomic Testing Museum

Red Rock Canyon

The neon museum

Anyone want to help sponsor me at Dream Racing ?

I hit up Vegas at least once a year. We might have different tastes in life but I go for the fine dining and entertainment. My typical day is usually sleeping in until about 10am, have a glorious breakfast, spend a few hours in the pool and then get ready for the night. Night starts around 5 at any decent looking bar followed by at least a 4 star dinner then one of the fantastic shows. Ka is amazing and rock of ages is an inexpensive blast. The cheaper cirque du soleil haven't been very good (mystere, zarkana). Stop by a half price tickets stand before 2pm to get legit discounted tickets.

I live close enough to drive (7 hours) but I'm not aware of any wrecking yards in the area or even anything Z related. Machine gun experience is damn fun if your even curious about guns. The grand canyon is a whole day trip as its a 4 hour drive in each direction just to get there and back, but a helicopter tour can do the whole thing in under 4 hours if you have $400 a person for the flight. The hoover dam can be on the way if you drive but leaving from Vegas its a 5 hour bus tour filled with retirees

I suppose just like an inline 6 Vegas fun is a function of cubic dollars

Where are you staying?

Awesome. Thanks for the input. We're staying at one of the big hotels on the strip. My wife is out there for business and I'm just tagging along to carry her bags. So during the days, she'll be tied up and I should have some time to explore the stuff that she wouldn't be interested in. Evenings will probably be work related social gatherings and I expect there will be some shows as part of that.

The cubic dollars thing is typical. I'd love to do the heli-tour of the canyon, but I don't think I've got $400 to drop on that. If I did, I'd probably be taking some laps in a Ferrari. :)

Dinner and a show? Well, maybe for some people, but if you're really a car guy, then do this!

RACING SCHOOL, Exotics racing school is the ultimate driving experience at Las Vegas Speedway with Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche.

or at least this!

And if you must do the show thing, go see The Beatles "Love" cirque show at the Mirage. It's almost done it's 10 year run. Been three times.....

Budget double the posted price for any of the racing experiences. They charge for insurance and other fees. The one my brother did advertised "on a track" but it was actually a set of cones set up on a skidpad that was located at the track

Captain, it appears you and I have similar interests in tourism! LV does have some interesting things around. Adding a few more obscure or distant things to your list:

If you're seeing the Grand Canyon, you might also enjoy Lake Powell. (I've never been.) Extreme low water levels have apparently revealed some stunning formations.

In the general direction of California, I fondly remember seeing...

The Tehachapi wind farms (You can get a GREAT personal tour by a real engineer who will patiently answer all of your most technical questions. Best tour of anything I've ever had!)

The Ivanpah solar farm (Engineers will tour you there, too, but in tiny groups, answering fewer questions.)

The Mojave Airport. I don't think there are any tours, but you can look through the chain link fences at an ENORMOUS airplane graveyard. I also remember peering at experimental goings-on with SpaceX before I ever had any notion who they were or what they were doing.

The Joshua Tree National Forest. Extreme heat and drought from climate change are starting to kill off the Joshua trees. You might want to see them while you can.

I'm sure there are other things of interest in that part of the world. However, when were were blowing through there on a schedule, with a big camper loaded with furniture, destined for LA, that's about all we could take in.

When i am out of town i like to look at the bronze sculpture of that city.

Outside of Riviera, there's a delightfully cheeky homage to the Crazy Girls topless revue show--a bronzed sculpture of the backsides of Las Vegas showgirls.

Self Service Inventory Search | Nevada Pic A Part

pic a part currently has 2 zx's and 81 and a 83

I once scored a newly rebuilt N42 head here. Still running it on my car. Do NOT try taking big greasy

parts back on the plane with you like i did. Had to ship it home using usps. TSA doesn't like

greasy flammable parts in the plane cargohold. Remember too, it's bloody hot in this area in the

middle of summer. I suggest an umbrella and lots of water.

and there's always the las vegas craigslist

las vegas for sale / wanted classifieds "datsun 280z" - craigslist

And if like IMAX theatres there's one inside the big pyramid. cheap entertainment... you'll need

that after spending hundreds $$$ on the live shows.

black gold man, funny you posted that pic. I was watching a show last night called "Brew Dogs" and they were in vegas trying to brew the most expensive beer ever (with local help from Tenaya Creek Brewery). The show wasn't good enough to keep me coming back to watch other episodes, but there were some fun spots.

Anyway, that place with the bronze butts was on that show as well. Also mentioned in that show was Joseph James Brewing Company in Henderson which sounds nice.

hr369 , Thanks for the info on the yards. And I'll keep your advice about getting the parts home in mind! :)
