Posted August 3, 201410 yr comment_452660 So I have vinyl flooring or plastic or something in my FJ cruiser and love it so much more than carpet. I am looking at something similar for my 78 280z. Has anyone done this or seen it? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49755-vinyl-instead-of-carpet/ Share on other sites
August 3, 201410 yr comment_452668 Vinyl, plastic, rubber flooring is typical of utility vehicles like pick up trucks and your FJ as it's easier to clean/hose the crud and corruption up after work or play. The Z generally doesn't go off roading, intentionally, or carry construction supplies. So, they came with carpet. Have you tried generic rubber mats from WalMart or your FLPS? They could fit over or replace floor carpet. The rear deck carpet replacement will be a little harder to source.Dennis Edited August 3, 201410 yr by psdenno Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49755-vinyl-instead-of-carpet/#findComment-452668 Share on other sites
August 3, 201410 yr comment_452682 The carpet helps keep the interior road noise level down on mine. I found some nice thick rubber mats at one of the chain stores that fit perfect, probably Advance but I can't remember.Without the carpet when I shut the door it makes a "ting" sound, with the carpet it's more of a "thud" sound. You could take the carpet out and see how you like it, it's not fastened down; at least mine isn't. August 3, 201410 yr comment_452684 Most rubber mats can be trimmed to fit too. But mats are damn ugly in a nice car (except for winter use, where it snows.) I kinda like the diamond-pattern vinyl on the transmission hump, but still like the carpet on the floors. Carpet on the floor (where your feet are) gets bunched up, so I like the vinyl, which lays flat and stays put. Plus the vinyl only needs a damp cloth to clean, instead of a vacuum cleaner, hoses, attachments, etc. My carpets are fasted only near the door sill, so they bunch up near the trans hump - it's UGLY and won't smooth out Edited August 3, 201410 yr by TomoHawk Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49755-vinyl-instead-of-carpet/#findComment-452684 Share on other sites
August 3, 201410 yr comment_452710 I recall reading the early 240's come with rubber mats instead of carpet... Can someone confirm? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49755-vinyl-instead-of-carpet/#findComment-452710 Share on other sites
August 3, 201410 yr comment_452712 Yes, Julio. I think some 70 Z owners prize them. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49755-vinyl-instead-of-carpet/#findComment-452712 Share on other sites
