Vinyl instead of carpet?

Vinyl, plastic, rubber flooring is typical of utility vehicles like pick up trucks and your FJ as it's easier to clean/hose the crud and corruption up after work or play. The Z generally doesn't go off roading, intentionally, or carry construction supplies. So, they came with carpet. Have you tried generic rubber mats from WalMart or your FLPS? They could fit over or replace floor carpet. The rear deck carpet replacement will be a little harder to source.

The carpet helps keep the interior road noise level down on mine. I found some nice thick rubber mats at one of the chain stores that fit perfect, probably Advance but I can't remember.

Without the carpet when I shut the door it makes a "ting" sound, with the carpet it's more of a "thud" sound. You could take the carpet out and see how you like it, it's not fastened down; at least mine isn't.

Most rubber mats can be trimmed to fit too. But mats are damn ugly in a nice car (except for winter use, where it snows.)

I kinda like the diamond-pattern vinyl on the transmission hump, but still like the carpet on the floors. Carpet on the floor (where your feet are) gets bunched up, so I like the vinyl, which lays flat and stays put. Plus the vinyl only needs a damp cloth to clean, instead of a vacuum cleaner, hoses, attachments, etc.

My carpets are fasted only near the door sill, so they bunch up near the trans hump - it's UGLY and won't smooth out
