Hello Everyone!

My name is Ash, I am a new member and new Z owner. I restore 1981 BMW e21 for past 4 years and last week found this beauty 1977 280Z for $1200 it was seating in the barn for past 6 years. I cleaned fuel tank, new wires, radiator, plugs, tires, brakes and etc.... Now, I have a rough idle and rich misfire. I found a hose that was plugged (bolt inside the hose) the hose goes to Timing advance distributor three way hose. Thus, I have a feeling my car is running advance all the time because of this hose. Now, I am trying to find where do I need to plug in or am I missing a component couldn't find it. Why this hose is plugged at the first place. I've spent hours and hours ended up empty handed, spent 2 hours on google nothing. Kind of frustrating.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you tons!

Welcome Aren2014,

First question is what carburetors are installed. The stock car came with 2 SU style carbs. Some have replaced the stock carbs with downdraft Webers.

Many have replaced these with 3 dual carbs (Weber, Solex, or Mikuni). The triple carbs have one barrel for each cylinder. Triple carbs have a different intake manifold and lack a vacuum port for the distributor. Getting the triples set up properly is problematic.

If you have triples, others will have to help you further as I have no experience with them.

Other versions have fuel injection and even turbos. With the age of our cars, engines swaps are not uncommon.

Hi, Welcome to the club.

That hose goes to the distributor advance and the BCDD (Boost Controlled De-acceleration Device) going on you discription. Its probably been blocked because the advance diaphragm in the dizzy is torn and leaking vacuum. The EFI doesnt like vacuum leaks.

Here is a link to the FSM (Factory Service Manual) and if you scroll down to the "others" section you will find the EFI suppliment.

Its often called the EFI bible. Once you get to know your 280Z you will know why it called that.

If you google "datsun 280Z bcdd" you will find info on that here too.

1977 would have fuel injection. If the hose to the distributor is plugged, then there would be no vacuum advance at all.

These cars tend to develop a bunch of small problems after sitting for a long time. The best thing to do is to check as many things as you can to be sure that they're working correctly. A multimeter, the Service Manual and some time.

You can download the manual at either of the first two sites below, and the Electronic Fuel Injection Guide on the third one. Use the 1980 guide, it covers all cars from 1975 to 1980.
