jwilliams7200 Posted August 12, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 12, 2014 (edited) Okay! So to start, I can't read those stupid wiring diagrams worth a flip. I have come across a low grade HID conversion kit for my headlights. Each headlight works individually, but when I hook them up simultaneously, they flicker back and forth. I have decided to wire relays into the original circuit and route wire straight from the battery to each of the headlights. Problem is, I don't understand how the brights even work. . What I'm asking for is a walkthrough of the wiring from the battery, through whatever switches, and to the headlights. High beams and low beams. Stock setup. I can't seem to find anything descriptive on this matter. If you do know of a walkthrough, a URL would do fine. If not, once I gain a sufficient understanding, I will post a thread myself. Thank you! SteveJ Posted August 12, 2014 Share #2 Posted August 12, 2014 Look at the drawing for the 260Z circuit. The wire colors are the same, but the connectors and fuse locations are a little different. The W/R wire comes off the battery/alternator and goes to the headlight switch. It comes out as a Red wire. The R wire goes to the left & right headlight fuses and comes out R for the right headlight and R/Y for the left headlight. There are two wires that come off each headlight and go back to the high/low beam switch. The R/W wire is for the high beams, and the R/B wire is for the low beams. The switch determines which of those two wires is connected to ground.
jwilliams7200 Posted August 13, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted August 13, 2014 Thank you for your reply, Steve. Didn't think I'd get one, haha. I will reply with more questions or a conclusion on Thursday.
SteveJ Posted August 13, 2014 Share #4 Posted August 13, 2014 Be sure to search on this site, too. There are plenty of posts on headlights.
Jarvo2 Posted August 13, 2014 Share #5 Posted August 13, 2014 I would highly suggest either buying the Dave Irwin harness from MSA or build your own like I did ... Dave's 1972 Datsun 240z: Headlight wiring harness with relays
jwilliams7200 Posted August 18, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted August 18, 2014 Well, a little later than Thursday, my apologies. I figured out that my battery was just bad, so that's why I could never get the ballasts for the headlights to operate simultaneously. Fixed that, problem solved. Thanks a lot for the diagram and explanation, Steve! I'm gonna do what Jarvo says and build my own relay harness using that guide.
SteveJ Posted August 18, 2014 Share #7 Posted August 18, 2014 One nice thing about buying Dave's relay harness (via Motorsport Auto) is that it's plug and play. I would suggest going that route.
