Hello all,

I am in the process of buying a 72 240z. And would like your thoughts on if I should pull the trigger and buy the vehicle. It is a rust free car, all original paint. Has about 130 xxx plus miles. Car does not run, needs clutch and brake cylinder replaced.

Seller is seeking $2900 for it and I am wondering what do you guys think about the asking price ? Car will need new interior, dash has a few cracks, and I'm not even sure if motor will run after fixing clutch and brake cylinder. The body itself is in solid condition minus a dent on the hood. It is not a local seller so I have not seen the car in person as well.

The body is the biggest $$$$ cost and slowest for repair-everything else is easier and cheaper.

I like it. If the motor is good, $2,500 would be fair. But since you can't drive it, offer $2,000 or less.

Just from the few photos you posted, this car looks like it's worth $2500 to $3000, considering it has very little rust. Since the car isn't in running condition due to the clutch and brakes, I would try to negotiate the price closer to $2500. Also, this car has a Series I dash and center console, which would make it a Series II 1971. Production of the Series II ended in August 1971 and since this car is titled as a 1972, it was probably produced in mid to late 1971. To replace the Series I style dash would cost $1000 to $1500.

Thanks for the input and information guys! Hes pretty firm with 2900, tried talking him down to 2500 but he won't budge. Hopefully when i go down to see it in person and thoroughly inspect it he'll be a little flexible. But yikes, replacing that dash will cost 1000-1500? Will a series II dash fit with the same center console?

I wouldn't worry about the difference between $2500.00 and $2995.00 - What I would be concerned with - is the actual condition of the car. If it has a really good, original, solid body - with all components present - - if the wiring harnesses haven't been hacked up - if the front frame rails are solid - if there is no rust holes under the battery etc. etc. … $$3K would be a bargain today. Plus that is a great color..

It has a battery in it so maybe it will turn over. Might be worthwhile to take your own battery and some tools so that you don't get the last minute "darn it the battery's dead" excuse for not checking electrical and engine condition. A locked up engine, or weird noises, are good for negotiating. Good to know in any case. But, on the other hand, sometimes not being able to hear the engine turn over is a better tool for talking price down. Depends on how important an engine is to you on if you want to know or not.

The pictures look good but I always wonder when they only show one side. There doesn't seem to be any reason not to show the passenger side also.

Never pay the asking price and don't worry too much about the cracked dash. Mine has been cracked for about 35 years and the car is still as fun to drive as when it was new

If it is really as clean as it looks, it's worth what the seller is asking. That said, never trust a seller. Inspect the car from below and make sure there isn't hidden rust. It probably needs the fuel tank to be dropped and cleaned before it will run.

How long has it been stored since last driving ?
