Posted August 20, 201410 yr comment_453804 I see in the Black Dragon catalog for the R200 they list the side carrier bearings (2), the front pinion bearing, and the rear pinion bearing. However, they don't list a pilot bearing like they do for the R180. Doesn't the R200 have a pilot bearing?I'd really appreciate it If someone who has done a rebuild on the R200 could verify and list for me exactly which bearings are needed. Also, if I knew exaclty which to order it looks like I could save quite a bit of money through Rock Auto for example instead of buying a rebuild kit.Gary Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49884-exactly-which-bearings-are-needed-to-rebuild-an-r200-diff/ Share on other sites

August 20, 201410 yr Author comment_453808 Thank you Blue. Like the R180, it does look like there are 3 bearings associated with the pinion in the R200 but for whatever reason Black Dragon doesn't show the front ball joint bearing. And that is probably the one thats making the howling (whinning) noise.Gary Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49884-exactly-which-bearings-are-needed-to-rebuild-an-r200-diff/#findComment-453808 Share on other sites
August 20, 201410 yr comment_453809 In most cases you don't need to replace the bearings in an R180 or R200. They are pretty sturdy and if the diff has had the fluid changed a couple times in its lifetime the bearings are probably still good. August 20, 201410 yr Author comment_453812 John, might the howling (whinning) noises most likily becoming from the contact pattern for the ring/pinion gears being off or ?Gary Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49884-exactly-which-bearings-are-needed-to-rebuild-an-r200-diff/#findComment-453812 Share on other sites
August 20, 201410 yr comment_453820 Incorrect pinion and crown wheel contact is the main cause of diff whine. If bearings are gone than the pinion and crown will need work as well. Might be better off looking for a new diff. You can use "bearing blue" or the red stuff, can't think of its name right now, to check the contact patern and refer to fsm. Its a lot of hassle getting it right if you don't have the right special tools to measure pinion height etc. A diff specialist would have a better chance getting it adjusted.Chas Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49884-exactly-which-bearings-are-needed-to-rebuild-an-r200-diff/#findComment-453820 Share on other sites
August 20, 201410 yr Author comment_453821 I wasn't going to try to rebuild it myself. I found a Trany/diff specialist who say he can do it. However, I was going to order all the parts myself (eg bearings, seals, gaskets) hoping to get good quality at a reasonable price and then just pay him for all the labor. August 20, 201410 yr comment_453824 I dont know what quality bearings BD use, but all the bearing are still available through Nissan except the pilot bearing. They would have to measure it when they remove it or if its in good condition reuse it.The four available bearings will cost about $230 IIRC.If you are thinking of a rebuild, this would be probably the minimum:Side bearings: 38440-N3100 (2)Pilot bearing: 38335-N3100 NLAPinion bearing: 38120-13201 (front)Pinion bearing : 38120-61000 (back)Front seal: 38189-N3100Pinion shaft nut: 38216-N3100Side seals: 38342-N3100 (2)Diff cover gasket: 38352-N3100Breather: 38352-78600Chas Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49884-exactly-which-bearings-are-needed-to-rebuild-an-r200-diff/#findComment-453824 Share on other sites
August 21, 201410 yr Author comment_453876 Hi Chas. I googled each of those part numbers and they all see to be available, even the Pilot Bearing, from a couple of different distributors at reasonal prices. For example;Axle Differential Bearing | Genuine Nissan | 38440-N3111Thanks for listing them for meGary Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/49884-exactly-which-bearings-are-needed-to-rebuild-an-r200-diff/#findComment-453876 Share on other sites
