Brought home my first z yesterday. The car appears to be in good shape with no rust, straight body, one owner, 88k miles. Cost me $7k... I think it's a fair price based on what I've seen. Thanks in advance for all of the help, looking forward to start digging in.

What seemed like a really good buy, may end up being just an ok buy. Found rust in the driver side floor panel. Taking it to a local Z specialist to examine. The initial euphoria is wearing off and an bit of realism is setting in... that this is going to be a long term project. That's ok, in it for the long haul.

That's the right attitude to have, it's a hobby that'll keep you busy for a long time. I drive mine less and less now that I'm learning how to work with them and fearful some jack-wad is going to hit my car. I thought I'd found a real gem of a car myself, then a hole under the passenger's seat appeared after removing the seats and carpet.

mine was a "rust free car" too - then when i went to change the headlights and took out the wheel well liner i discovered some rot up in there. it totally bummed me out for a while, but i just cut it out and patched it up (luckily the patch is hidden so i could do it myself w/relatively poor bodywork skills) and moved on to other issues. truth is, i love the car just as much and being in it for the long haul means that ya just get over it. in the end, the more you do, the more it's really YOURS.

...at least that's what i keep telling myself, as i prepare to pull the timing cover this weekend ;)

Mine was a project with "a little" rust. Now I understand that the PO meant the HOLES in the floorboards, fender well & hatch sill-plate had "little" rust. Welcome to the club. Most of us have experienced or are experiencing this same challenge. It's part of owning a Z.

Looks like I've solved one of my problems... What to do with all of my spare time. Spent two hours tonight removing weather striping in preparation for new rubber coming from MSA on Thursday. In fact, I had an inkling of what I was getting into, just spent a year building a Cb750 from a basket case

That is a nice CB750 JHeck! As others have said, finding a truly rust free Z is reaching unicorn status. Since the metal in these cars was not galvanized it starts rusting in just medium humidity. By the looks of your CB you know your way around tools and your car sounds like a good foundation for a restoration. Have fun with it, be patient, and enjoy the process. I look forward to catching up with you and your Z in the near future.
