Engine bay inspection lamp restoration question....

Another question for everyone :)

Does anyone know if, or how the top lamp assembly can be removed from the housing? The part I'm talking about is the 1-1/2 inch center disk.

I'd like to send my inspection light housing in to have a new zinc coating applied to them so that they're nice and shiny again.

Hi Phil, I apologize I have not replied to your PM earlier I am just now seeing your message and for some reason the forum won't seem to let me reply to PM's.

To answer your question yes I de-soldered the wire from the lamp housing, not at the bulb socket. One side of the wire is soldered to the lamp housing and the other I believe goes to the switch.

If you are still working on this project I believe I have pic's of my lamp when I disassembled it I am happy to send your way.

Yeah, I'm still working on getting my engine bay lamp re-plated.... What I'm trying to figure out is... Is there a way to remove the center portion of the lamp head, So I can send the head, and body in for re-plating?

Here's a picture of the part I'm trying to figure out if I can remove prior to plating (the part with the red arrow), I'm not seeing anyway that this center portion comes out, without cutting it out.

If that piece isn't removable.... Will the bulb still work correctly after it's been re-plated?? I'm thinking it won't..

Let me know how and if you had a solution to this problem...

I had mine zinc plated with the 'top lamp assembly' in place. The guy who did it said it was not necessary to remove. Turns out he was right, came out perfect and operates fine. Have a chat to your 'plater' about it.

Phil, if you look at the back of the bulb socket you'll see 6-7 serated teeth that have been folded in, crimped to hold that phenolic disk that contacts the bulbs terminal, it looks like if you carefully bend those teeth back then the bulb contact, spring and green wire should come out.

Hello Phil, I removed the lamp assembly by first heating the ground wire with a soldering iron and using a solder sucker in the center of the bulb contact removing the wire.

I then heated the ground wire soldered to the hook on the bottom of the Inspection Light and used a soldered sucker to remove the solder attaching the ground wire. At this point both wires were removed and the lamp assembly was free to remove from the wires. If you choose to go this route be sure to be careful removing the small brown composite positive bulb contact at the center of the Inspection Light. There is a small metal washer on which the positive wire is soldered be sure to be careful when the solder is removed not to loose it. Below the brown composite washer is a spring be sure to watch for that as well.

This is just one way to disassemble the Inspection Light.

That's the info i was needing.... I wasn't sure if I was being stupid, and not seeing something in getting either the lamp assembly removed without actually un-soldering the connection at the bulb holder....
