Restoring 1972 Ahmeter / fuel gauge housing

The paint on my instrument gauges is worn and is showing up the White underneath layer of paint. What will be the correct restoration method? I believe the housing is made of plastic, correct me if i am wrong! Should i just wash it and spray a can of matte or semi gloss black spray paint? Any advice? THey are functional. I just want to make sure they look pristine.

I used a black Sharpie (magic marker) on mine. Don't even have to to remove them.
