jharvat Posted September 4, 2014 Share #1 Posted September 4, 2014 (edited) I have scanned through the various Mallory threads but didn't find exactly what I was looking for so bear with me if I am covering old ground here.I just purchased a Mallory distributor with a mechanical advance for my 1973 240 running triple Webers. I currently have a stock dizzy, stock coil, ballast resistor, etc.Leading to the distributor, I have three wires - yellow going to the water temp sensor, a black wire and a green wire both attached to the dizzy. The green wire seems to just attach to the outside of the unit (ground?).Can I just run the black and green wire into the new Mallory unit with no further changes (keep all the other components the same)? I constantly hear about people who do and do not have tach problems - have we reached a consensus on whether this is a consistent problem? Is there a fix for it?I haven't actually received the Mallory unit yet - can I expect decent instructions from them? Thanks for any information you can provide.(Note: Car is a 4-speed currently with a single-point distributor) Edited September 4, 2014 by jharvat
Carl Beck Posted September 5, 2014 Share #2 Posted September 5, 2014 Mallory Distributor - or Mallory Unilite Distributor?Carl B.
jharvat Posted September 5, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted September 5, 2014 It is a Unilite.
Carl Beck Posted September 5, 2014 Share #4 Posted September 5, 2014 DO NOT hook up the Unilte without reducing the voltage feed to it - you can burn it out. This might help.. Mallory UniLite Hook Up<br> for 72 Datsun 240Zthe wiring there is for a 72 - and I can't remember if the 73 Tach is exactly the same or not.FWIW,Carl B. jharvat Posted September 5, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted September 5, 2014 I noticed you have a ProMaster Coil. I just have a stock unit. Do I have to go with a different coil too?
Carl Beck Posted September 5, 2014 Share #6 Posted September 5, 2014 I don't believe you do… should be able to run with the stock coil..Carl
Zed Head Posted September 5, 2014 Share #7 Posted September 5, 2014 Here's a little extra info, in addition to Carl Beck's. In case the unit doesn't come with its own or to plan ahead.http://prestoliteperformance.com/media/instructions/mallory/Mallory_Instructions_unilite_distributor_37_38_45_47.pdf
