I need a little help getting the rear suspension put back together on my 1972 240z. I took off the old front differential insulator, seen below, which has a center bolt that is fastened with a washer and nut.

The new insulator, seen below, has a rubber center section where the bolt should be. Is this the right insulator? How does it attach to the cross member?

Also, this project has taken me a few weeks as I got derailed with the rear control arm pin for a couple of weeks. Now my memory is fuzzy and I can't remember how I disassembled the cross member. There are two bolt holes on either side of the center hole in the front cross member. (see below circled in yellow) I don't remember anything attached here when I disassembled the cross member but it's been awhile. What attaches to these holes?

I'm guessing that there's a stud under that rubber. Maybe someone missed a step during manufacturing and didn't clean up the leakage. Or somebody forgot to put the bolt in but poured the rubber anyway.

The two holes are probably for the big ugly vibration damper that Nissan added to later Z's.

You're going to feel silly when you pull that rubber protector off the threads...

The two threaded holes in the crossmember were used for an optional weight that was hung off the crossmember to counteract vibration. Nothing for you to do.

Eureka!! Under the rubber cover is a nice shiny bolt. The rubber cover was on pretty tight so I had to grab it with some pliers. I do, in fact, feel silly. I'd like to lie and say this was the first time I was an idiot...but sadly, that would not be true. Thanks for the help.

The only way anyone has the right to poke fun at someone elses mistakes, is if they have a degree from the university of doing silly things. As anyone who has worked with me knows, I have a PhD from there.

We have a satellite U.D.S.T school down here. I put my pistons in the block 3 times. Notch forward, dimple up, gap at 10 2 and 4 etc.

I used my PHD Saturday planting some Knockout Roses for a neighbor. She paid me back.
