February 20, 20178 yr Author comment_513490 Got the other side finished and the rest of the stitch welding done and a few other patches, Now this the job I have been putting off cause I'm not sure if I'm up to the task, compound angles, multiple layers and not much room to work without removing the quarter panel and I really don't want to do that. Oh, and those patches on the inside lip of the wheel well, that's not my work. I'm way down that rabbit hole now, got most of the garbage out of the way before I called it a day. February 21, 20178 yr comment_513511 Looking good Chris. The bracing looks very neat and tidy. Did you get that idea from someone or your own inventiveness? Are you doing this because you can't use the tower brace over the bmw engine? Must be a pleasure to work on now all the metal is so clean. Thanks Chas, ideas, who knows where they come from, some are mine some are stolen. Yes can't put a brace over the engine so I thought I would try to stabilize things a different way. But I have just found out a few days ago that I don't have to have the stock air box now that I'm using a stand alone FI management system, the air box was the reason I couldn't have the brace bar in the first place,       oh man.So much for my ideas. I may end up with something like this, in which case I would have plenty of room for a cross brace. The car is a joy to work on now, I'm dipping every project from now on.  Edited February 21, 20178 yr by grannyknot Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/50240-thinking-about-installing-an-bmw-m6-engine-in-my-z/?&page=29#findComment-513515 Share on other sites

Prevents a lot of R&D & redo work. I never get it right first time If you can fit the brace, I think I would do it. With the other braces you made, you should not need to brace the towers back to the centre of the firewall. That would help keep it clean. I can imagine dipping would be addictive. It really looks clean. February 21, 20178 yr comment_513545 Very true. I wish there was a facility close by me. I would definitely considered that over sand blasting. I still have the outer shell to sand off now too as I didn't sand blast any sheet metal. February 21, 20178 yr Author comment_513574 Got the gas tank filler panel tacked in, what a pain, no room to move, and started in on the floor pans, they are in fairly good shape so I will be able to keep the replacement panel to just the flat piece . February 22, 20178 yr Author comment_513654 Thanks Mark, we might end up finishing about the same time. Battery box is in, haven't completely finished the main seam on the floor pan but couldn't resist moving a head on the stock floor pan rail and the Baddog rails, Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/50240-thinking-about-installing-an-bmw-m6-engine-in-my-z/?&page=29#findComment-513654 Share on other sites

February 24, 20178 yr Author comment_513736 The headers came back from High Tech Coating today, they use the same ceramic coating that Jet Hot does. Now I have to figure out a way to install them without banging, scraping or scuffing them, Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/50240-thinking-about-installing-an-bmw-m6-engine-in-my-z/?&page=29#findComment-513736 Share on other sites

February 25, 20178 yr Author comment_513830 Finally finished the welding today So glad, feels like I have been welding all winter.   P/S rail was pretty banged up so had to do some surgery to get it to fit inside the Baddog rail, I'm sure after I look at it for a while I will pull the welder back out and start filling in and fine tunning but for now have to clean the shop and get ready for primer prep.
