Ben,

That's a good point about the Fog Lamp wiring being taped off. On my first Z car ( a 1971 UK-market HS30 ) the original wires for the indicator lamps ( deleted from the front quarter valances and moved to the top of the front bumper ) were disconnected and taped back onto the front loom. The Fog Lamp connectors were also there and taped back too - but they still had proper connectors on them.

I always thought that one of the poor design features of the S30-series Z was the messy routing and ugly appearance of the front part of the loom where it runs across the rad support panel. Its not that nice to look at through the grille, and its exposed to extremes of heat ( from the rad ) and a fair bit of weather too.

Regarding those two cars that Datsun UK imported before the first real imports got going; they were brought in as display cars for the London Motor Show, and Datsun UK managed to register them without going through UK Type Approval. It was always possible to do this ( at least up until recently ) as the cars could be put through a very simple Single Vehicle approval - basically pretending that they were personal imports - and get them through that way. For "proper" bulk approval they realised that a change to a few details was necessary.

This is an interesting slant to the discusion, wiring across the lower radiator support. The only way I found the taped back wires was due to the wire bend radius, I was able to feel the radius through the tape. And yes my loom also had the foglight wires lying dangling from the loom.

Ben, I belive you have a late delivery 73 Z, did yours have evidence of the bumper indicators being fitted or that E code sticker on the right front strut tower.

Alan, that practice of single car authorisation happens here in Australia and yes not just personal imports NISSAN did it here with some of the mid 80's series bluebirds, even 2, 710's SSS got registration here, yes real one's, must have been a real good inspection.

Did those two early Zeds do the 1970 Earls Court Show and where they HS30. Is there a record of those two chassis numbers.

Hi Steve,

Yes - those two cars were indeed "HS30" vin prefixed. One of them did the 1970 Motor Show at Earl's Court ( it was the the Datsun UK franchise stand ).

Both VIN numbers still exist - one is undergoing comprehensive restoration ( HS30-00035 ) and the other has been a race car for many years ( HS30-00034 ) and may well be taking a fairly long holiday in New Zealand later this year, as its owner Mr Tim Riley has decided to emigrate...........

Hi Steve - yes my car is a late '73; VIN HS30-103353. ADR date 08/73.

It had the indicators above the bumpers, but I intend to use orange globes in the lower assembly & use parkers internal to the H4's that I have.

The reason for this is two-fold (it was originally only 1).

1)

One of my lenses is cracked & they are NLA

2)

My US-spec bumper doesn't have holes in the top for the mounting of any lights (just holes on the bottom for the fog lamps.

As we have started this topic, does anyone know who made them, were they every fitted as standard, and does anyone have any photo's?

Also we're aware of the front plugs, but exactly where are the switch terminators, I know they must be somewhere posibily in the consul loam, but I've never come across them?

thanks or the information on those two show cars, I should have known you would have the information at your finger tips. I must say one of those pictures (HS30 00035) looked like a rough one.

Your pictures were excellent, informative, was that the digtal mapping (crank angle sensor) distributor on the L28, so you were running digital injection. Another I noticed an FJ20 box next to the car, or at least the shifter in one photo. Love the induction plumbing on the new injected intercooled set up, very well set up and well crafted, aircraft grade stainless tube if i am not mistaken.

It is a pity your lense was damaged for the bumper indicator, I have the same problems with mine perished rubber and damaged reflectors.

I agree with you I would love to know more about position of the switches and usage, to activate the fog lamp circuit on my Z, has anyone got the information.

Hi Steve,

Yeah - 35 is pretty rusty, but will rise again. Its now under full and comprehensive restoration and its owner is very determined. You know things have got really bad when the even the VIN number is rusted to hell.............

The factory Fog Lamps are a very rare Option part, and I've seen good ones fetch very high prices in Japan.

The fog lights are NLA - I tried to buy some a few years back.

They are listed in the standard HS30 parts fiche/book, as is the S20 oil cooler (but no other S20 parts...)

Steve, the distributor setup is custom. Series 2 910 (bluebird) Bosch housing, Holden greasy-6 button & cap, fabricated Hall-Effect sensor mounting & chopper-wheel installation.

Of course, it is locked up too. This is all a proven Haltech E6A setup that had done over 120,000km (including use on the original 2.4L turbo).

The gearbox is attached to an RB25DE - for my dad's 240Z (the white one in the background).

I do have an FJ box though - in my DR30 of course! My dad has one too - along with the FJ20E in his 1600!

You may notice that the intercooler plumbing looks very similar in the old & new setup shots - conveniently, very little modification was required to make it suit completely different intake & exhaust systems....

My indicator seals were buggered too - even with 2x '73 240Z's we didn't have a 'good' pair to use :disappoin

The indicator lenses & seals were not offered as spares - only the whole assembly. When I priced one in 1996 it was over $300AUD, they are NLA now.

Thanks for the information on the Fog Lamps. I take it the fog lamps attach on the under side of the standard S30 front Bar. Do the fog lamps have have yellow lenses, do they mount below the bar indicators.

it always amazes me the equipment at your place. Thanks for the info on the indicators. All I ever managed to get was a complete housing in perfect/ new surplus condition with no lense or rubber even had new screw circa 1996.

Yes - 35 is really bad. Its actually being restored with the help of a donor shell from the correct period, if you know what I mean.

The Fog Lamps had clear lenses as far as I remember ( its so long since I clapped eyes on a set...... ) and they mounted in the pre-drilled holes UNDER the standard front bumper, quite close to the Over-riders ( do you call them that in Australia? ) but on the "inside" of them - if you know what I mean. From what I've heard from friends in Japan, they were not all that powerful or effective.............

Alan, thanks for the extra information on 35, it is good to see we are all looking to sustain the 240z through any avenue even Donnor shells. Did I tell you in Sydney we have a mini economy driven by donnor shells of all diffrent types of cars.

The Fog Lamp sounds interesting from that mounting description but it is still a bit confusing. Yes the overider will do it here, my Zed did not have them on the front bar, just the rear due to the indicators up front.

Did British delivery 73 Zeds have the overider, it does not seem feasible.
