Posted March 8, 200322 yr comment_29100 I just got my Z and it hasn't been registered in about 7 years I believe. As far as I know it has been sitting in a driveway broken down.Question: How will the DMV treat this? Will I have to pay them a lot of $$?Thanks for the help! Hopefully the previous owner didn't have his head up his a$$ and DID get a NON-OP certificate for the car. If he did do that, you are OK and will just have to pay the transfer fees, taxes and new registration. If he screwed up and just didn't register the car, you will most likely have to pay penalties which could be very high. CA DMV charges extreme penalty prices for registration violations.Good Luck!Carl Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5034-california-dmv-help/#findComment-29104 Share on other sites
March 9, 200322 yr comment_29160 if your car hasn't been registered in 7 years, then the plates on your car probably aren't in the DMV system anymore.we bought our Z in Aug 2001. the plates on the car expired in '95. after owning the car for 3 months, and STILL not recieving the new sticker from the DMV, I called them. they tried to look up my plate, but couldn't find it in the system! so they sent me new plates. no penalty, no additional fees.I want to say that in CA, an inactive plate "disappears" after 5 years. I have TX tags and title on my Z now, so I guess that in 5 years the plates CA gave me will be useless....are you military ? if so, register it on your home state. #*!? California! March 9, 200322 yr Author comment_29168 well that makes things sound a lot better. The plates still have '95 tags on them, so I assume that it hasn't been registered since.Mind telling me exactly how you went about not paying any penalties - so I can attempt to do the same? No, I'm not military, though my cousin just re-signed and oddly enough he is from Cali. shipping to Fort Hood 1st Cav. in July. Maybe you two should trade! :stupid: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5034-california-dmv-help/#findComment-29168 Share on other sites
