Borg Warner T5 Transmission Install.

I'm looking to install a Borg-Warner T5 in my '73.  From the different comments I've read, the rear transmission cross-member for the change seems to cause a lot of heartburn due to differences in mounting point locations on the two transmissions.   This transmission came from an '83.  In '83 both the Nissan 5 speed and the Borg-Warner T5 were options.  That being the case, were there different rear cross-members for the Nissan 5 speed and the T5?  If so, why won't the T5 cross-member work?  Or, were the body mounting points in different locations?

I'm fairly sure that I've read that the ZX crossmember is flipped when you install the T5 in place of the 71B.  Search around for instructions on swapping in to a ZX and you might see something.  You'll need a custom length propeller shaft also.

Many seem to think that the T5 doesn't really offer much over the 71B.  "T5" is a buzz term that sounds like a strong transmission, but really there were tens or hundreds of variations, some strong, some weak.  FS5R90A is the correct way to identify it.  Here's a good link describing the various transmissions.  The 71B seems to handle about the same power, according to various threads I've seen.

It's a little more than just flipping the crossmember-there is some fabrication involved. Biggest advantage to the BW T-5 is the unlimited choices of shifters. The trans shifts very precisely and notchy at the same time with a quality shifter. The gearing is not a big deal unless you are racing and are specifically looking for close ratio performance.

Disadvantages: dedicated DS that is mated to the proper diff yoke. Some fabrication needed.
