Threehz Posted November 11, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 11, 2014 Just finishing my front suspension and now moving to the rear. Going to put in new poly bushings, springs, and struts. If I drop the entire rear suspension can I avoid doing the spindle pins? Thanks!
Hardway Posted November 11, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 11, 2014 Unfortunately no. In order to replace the outer bushings of the control arms the pins have to come out. There are plenty of threads dedicated to the misery of doing this including mine titled Spindle Pin Woes. You might get lucky but very few of us have been. Keep us posted on your progress! Zed Head Posted November 11, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 11, 2014 If the outer bushings aren't loose/worn, you might just leave them alone. You can remove the locking pin and the end nuts and see how tight the spindle pin is before making a decision. They slide right out for some people. Threehz Posted November 11, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted November 11, 2014 Well, then let's just get into it and see how things look. It's at least exciting to throw the front suspension back on today!
DatsunZGuy Posted November 11, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 11, 2014 Below is a good article on spindle pin removal to include information on a tool to make the procedure easier: http://dirtys30.blogspot.com/2011/02/how-to-240z-spindle-pin-removal.html

tamo3 Posted November 11, 2014 Share #7 Posted November 11, 2014 If you are lucky, you can get rid of it via hammering. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSPI1c1TD-
gwri8 Posted November 12, 2014 Share #8 Posted November 12, 2014 I am currently starting the rear end re-assembly on my 77. Started with the intention of just installing an RT mount. It evolved into a complete rear suspension re-build. I figured might as well since It was all apart anyway. My spindles came out without too much pain, not an easy pop out or anything like that, just a lot of hammer tapping, heat, PB Blaster and a drift bolt. Not sure that I needed to do the spindles but I'm glad I did. Blues tech tips helped a lot. http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/ Control arm bushings on the driver side was a different story, rusted on. Good Luck
Walter Moore Posted November 12, 2014 Share #9 Posted November 12, 2014 I had to use a sawsall, and then take the struts to a machine shop with a 30 ton hydraulic press. It was almost too much for the press.
Threehz Posted November 14, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted November 14, 2014 Well I got down there tonight and removed the nuts and other hardware from the passenger side, and the bushings actually look perfect. All the spindle pin hardware looks really nice and shiny and rust free, but I've decided I'm not even going to bother. Just doing springs and struts and leaving all the rear end bushings alone for now. I gave the pin a light pull just to test, not that easy, but it appears they won't be the worst ones around.
