I would like to purchase and install a cold air intake for my 1975 280Z which is currently stock.  I was hoping someone would have experience with this kind of bolt-on upgrade and whether it was worth it and also if they could recommend the best manufacturer out of the many choices out there.  

I took the plastic snorkel off, then put some screen in the opening of my air box.  Pretty much the same thing without the cost.  It's already in front of the radiator.

 

 

I bought the K&N kit from MSA. Had it on the car for a few months and went back to the stock set up. Didn't notice a HP increase. Probably wouldn't be noticeable anyway unless I had other mods besides exhaust done. $130 down the drain IMHO. I may try the K&N filter that fits into the stock snorkel unless someone can tell us that this also is a waste of time and money.

The K&N phenomenon is pretty interesting.  K&N started in the world of dirt bikes, I believe, where it's not uncommon to dump your bike in a stream, completely wetting the air filter.  They developed an oil-soaked gauze, or copied it from the old automotive technology.  Bikes also used oil-soaked foam but they didn't flow well.  Paper would just get ruined.  They've done a fantastic marketing job to grow in to other areas.  I remember reading dirt bike magazine articles about how the collection of dirt on the outside of the filter element actually increased the filtering effectiveness.  

 

Most tests show that the K&N filters flow a tiny bit more air but filter out a lot less dirt.  It's really old technology with a lot of marketing behind it.

In other words, what Zed Head is saying is that the K&N filter that fits into the stock snorkel also is a waste of time and money.

That's all I can find for the 240s and they're HIGH DOLLAR. 

They would work for non-EFI cars.

Thanks for sharing your experience/knowledge with me .

Did you notice any difference in the sound of your Zcar after doing what you did.

It has to be louder.  I have a 6 into 1 header with 2.5" exhaust, so it's loud anyway but I can say that after doing that it is really pulling some air in.

 

My plastic snorkel had a few cracks in the accordion part, got rid of that.  Chipmunks were storing acorns in my air filter box, got rid of that also.
