240ZRamona Posted December 14, 2014 Share #1 Posted December 14, 2014 I'm a newbie, so please forgive me for a stupid question. I've been looking all around for an answer to this but I can't seem to find it, and possibly because I'm not calling it the correct thing. I just purchased a 72 240z last week and I'm going to replace the shocks and springs and do some suspension/ brake work. When I pulled off the drivers front rotor, I noticed the (spindle?) is chewed. I'll provide a photo of what I'm talking about. I've only ever heard it called a spindle, but I can't find it anywhere. Is only apart of the whole strut/ knee assembly or can I get it seperate? SteveJ Posted December 14, 2014 Share #2 Posted December 14, 2014 It is a spindle. I didn't see any on ebay right now. You could buy it from ZCarSource.com, some other used parts place, or post on Facebook in Datsun parts & needs or 240Z 260Z 280Z lovers. Just be sure you get one for a 240Z or early 260Z.

zKars Posted December 15, 2014 Share #4 Posted December 15, 2014 And it is all part of the strut, can't replace just the spindle. Is it the threads that are screwed up or the outer bearing seat? Hard to tell from the picture.
Captain Obvious Posted December 15, 2014 Share #5 Posted December 15, 2014 I'm thinking it's more than just the threads. It looks like a previous owner seized and spun the outboard wheel bearing race.
John Coffey Posted December 15, 2014 Share #6 Posted December 15, 2014 You might be able to clean up the outer shoulder for the out bearing. Most likely the bearing siezed and deposited metal on the spindle. If you can remove that and polish the spindle you can save it.
rcb280z Posted December 15, 2014 Share #7 Posted December 15, 2014 I'm with John. Try to fix it because replacements are expensive. $500 on zcarsource.com! And they are used.
bacarl Posted December 15, 2014 Share #8 Posted December 15, 2014 A machine shop could probably help with cleaning up that outer race, and they could definitely repair the threads; I'm assuming you don't have a monster die you could use on those threads yourself. 240ZRamona Posted December 15, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted December 15, 2014 Thank you all for the ideas/ information! I think I'm going to try a machine shop to clean it up and repair it.
