Posted January 16, 201510 yr comment_461991 I'm going to put a bar across my garage ceiling joist for a hoist to pull a motor and transmission and would like to know a roundabout weight of the engine with transmission attached. Thanks,Cliff Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/50797-weight-of-24-with-4-speed/ Share on other sites
January 16, 201510 yr comment_461992 I believe I've seen 600 as the number for a full engine/trans package with everything dripping wet. I used to have a double 2x6 across two ceiling trusses from which I hung a chain hoist and pulled full eng/trnas packages for years. Roof is still where I left it. January 17, 201510 yr comment_462039 Having done it both ways, I prefer to drop the transmission from underneath with the car on tall jack stands. Without the tranny, it's much easier to remove the engine from the engine bay. You have to put a support under the back of the engine so it doesn't rotate and damage the engine mounts. Down-side, it's more work, and more time on your back under the car... January 18, 201510 yr Author comment_462045 I've pulled and reinstalled them together with one of those tilt things. Very easy on that downside you speak of, bad back pain as I'm getting older. Actually pulled them alone and probably could've went back in by myself but liked having extra eyes watching. January 20, 201510 yr comment_462168 Yep, doing them separately is a one person job. Pulling / installing the engine-trans combo together I consider a two person job. January 20, 201510 yr Author comment_462176 I've never done a 240 and when I pulled the one from my 280 I remember the cherry picker lift barely got in close enough. Damn huge bumpers. Anyway I've bought myself a chain hoist and am hoping to use that to pull the motor. After a lot of reading I'm thinking I should use the cherry picker to replace the newly rebuilt motor when I'm done. What have you used? or better yet, recommend? I remember the "V" shaped legs of the cherry picker were too wide to fit in between the front wheels and having to jack the rear waaaaay up to get in close enough. I like the idea of the chain hoist and have seen a way to make a bag for the extra chain, but if it fell on my car I think I'd die right there in my garage. January 20, 201510 yr comment_462177 You can take off a fender and pull it from the side, or put a couple blankets across the fender and have someone steady the lift so as not to put any pressure on the fender and lift it from the side. To take it off from the front, you need to remove front bumper, spoiler and valence.I assume that you are using a Harbor Freight lift. BTW.......If clearance is a problem from the front, put it on jack stands and pull a wheel. January 20, 201510 yr Author comment_462199 Thanks Diseazd Could you point me to your engine build thread? I can't remember the title. I have some questions that it would answer hopefully. For example, did you use a header or the OE exhaust manifold? I'm about to do what I've been bugging everybody about for the past 6 months. I've found a good Schneider profile for my E31. It maybe too much cam for street use, it's a little more than MSA's stage 3, I don't want to lose my license showing off. http://schneidercams.com/284-92F_L6.aspx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/50797-weight-of-24-with-4-speed/#findComment-462199 Share on other sites
January 20, 201510 yr comment_462204 Cliff.....I have 3 or 4 engine build threads. One is the L28 for the 72, one is the L28 for the White 70, and I think there's some info on the L24 for the silver 73. Also, in the thread Newest addition to the garage, I build an engine in that one too.......that is an L24 with an E31 head. Another thread is New Engine which is an L28 with an L24 crank and a P79 head.......take your choice if you can find those posts with Mike's new format. I had 6 or 7 pages of threads......don't know how to find the old ones any more. January 20, 201510 yr Author comment_462206 I'm going to save that search for a rainy day, you have so many. I read through "newest edition", the 918 automatic build and it was a L28 with a P79. Found the one about Citizen's machine Shop that had an E31 head on a .040" over L24 block but that's all it said. It was "Excellent Datsun machine Shop". I'll find it tonight, it's sunny and 65 outside now. I must get outside! You would about have to build the motor around that profile-HA Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/50797-weight-of-24-with-4-speed/#findComment-462299 Share on other sites
January 22, 201510 yr Author comment_462310 That cam is serious-are you that serious-really? You would about have to build the motor around that profile-HAAww, you caught it too. I'm a little slow with new stuff and this is definitely new to me. After talking with Jerry @Shcneider Cams he told me the same thing, "that's a lot of cam you know? do you really want that?". So he/we decided that I/we want this one;Grind Number: 270-80F Intake Duration (gross): 270 Exhaust Duration (gross): 280 Intake Duration (.050â€): 230 Exhaust Duration (.050â€): 240 Intake Valve Lift*: .460" Exhaust Valve Lift*: .460" Lobe Separation: 107 Intake Valve Lash: .010" Exhaust Valve Lash: .010" RPM Range: 2500-6600It's the same thing MSA sales as a stage 3. I'm getting new springs and retainers too, he's going to figure out which lash pads I need and send it all to a Datsun head shop in North Georgia I'm using. I'm about to call Delta and see about resurfacing my rockers. I thought about trying it myself after reading how but after buying all the sandpaper and brake cleaner plus my time and beers I'll drink I'm going with Delta. $50 ain't bad! Just spoke with Delta, $3 each to resurface mine. FedEx here I come.
